Durham's American Tobacco Trail Pedestrian Bridge Wins Engineering Excellence Award

DURHAM, N.C. - The American Tobacco Trail Pedestrian Bridge has received a state-wide award for engineering excellence.

The North Carolina chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC/NC) 2015 Engineering Excellence Awards program has recognized the pedestrian bridge as the 2015 Grand Award winner for Engineering Excellence in Structural Systems. The ACEC/NC competition recognizes outstanding projects designed by engineering firms across the state.

The pedestrian bridge is a self-anchored structure that combines a concrete stressed ribbon deck with steel arch ribs. With a span of 210 feet between arch supports and an overall deck length of 268 feet, it is the longest bridge of its kind and one of only two hybrid stressed ribbon pedestrian bridges in North America. The pedestrian bridge, which opened in February 2014, is the centerpiece of the final four-mile segment of the American Tobacco Trail, connecting two sections of a 22-mile rails-to-trails project, the longest in North Carolina. The bridge provides safe bike and pedestrian passage over Interstate 40 near The Streets at Southpoint.

Parsons Brinckerhoff served as project manager for the American Tobacco Trail Pedestrian Bridge from concept to completion, working on behalf of the City of Durham Public Works Department. The firm was responsible for the design of the bridge, as well as the foundations, electrical, lighting, trail, drainage, erosion control, and traffic control. Architect and Engineer Steven Grover provided the concept of the stress-ribbon bridge to Parsons Brinckerhoff, with the construction of the bridge and trail then completed by Blythe Construction, Inc.
