I like your idea, Pat.

Regardless of what it might look like to the average citizen, we have an
awesome storm water dept, and the cause of most of these sewage spills is a
result of us citizens improper disposal of grease, rags, etc, etc.

If we could reduce that down to just roots blocking the lines, we'd all
benefit from less expensive maintenance and in the long run, cleaner water.

Let's ask storm water to present at INC and pass the word on to the
neighborhoods.
We'll never be able to measure our effect, but it certainly couldn't hurt!

Given that this is the second spill already this year, maybe INC should
get a presentation or info to cascade to list-serves about:

    * What can residents do to help the sewer system?
    * What is the city doing -- and what additional resources are needed
-- to prevent sewer blocks? I have seen Chapel Hill's sewer cleaner
machine at events there.
    * Are there ways to get damage from sewage into one's insurance
policy?

Regards, pat

DURHAM, N.C. - The City of Durham Water Management Department reports that

Approximately 432,000 gallons of sewage spilled from the sanitary sewer

The surrounding area is under remediation and there are no immediate
visible adverse environmental impacts or hazards to persons or property.
The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources has been
notified.
