Energy Assistance Remains Available for Qualified Residents

Application Deadline for Funding March 31stDurham, NC -  February 19, 2015 - Considering the low temperatures and cold winds continuing to linger throughout North Carolina this week, it is the perfect time to remind Durham residents about the availability of Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) funds. LIEAP funds, provided as a one-time vendor payment to assist eligible households pay their heating and utility bills, can be applied for by residents in Durham through the Durham County Department of Social Services (DSS).
 
According to the Durham County DSS, there is nearly $716,000 remaining from the $1.4 million in Federal dollars allotted for 2014-2015. "Funding our residents leave on the table will go to other North Carolina counties that have overspent their LIEAP funds or are running low," says Assistant Director Jovetta Whitfield. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, March 31, 2015. The Federal funds typically go quickly, therefore, the assistance will end once the monies are exhausted or once the deadline arrives. 
 
"We have gone through many applications during this year's funding period and provided support to more than 2,601 residents so far. We want our residents to be aware that Durham County DSS is available to meet their energy assistance needs."
 
To qualify, households must: 
Have at least one United States citizen or non-citizen who meets the eligibility criteriaMeet an income testHave reserves at or below Be responsible for household utilities
