Annual Crime Report Offers Mixed News About Crime
The Durham Police Department's 2014 Annual Crime Report is offering mixed news about crime in Durham. The numbers show fewer homicides, rapes and motor vehicle thefts in 2014 than in the year before, but they also show a 15 percent increase in other violent crime due to more aggravated assaults and robberies. Property crime was also up by 2 percent from 2013. Find out what the department is doing to address those numbers.

Durham Offers Free Bulky Brush Removal Until March 13
To help residents clean up from last week's snow storm, the Solid Waste Management Department is offering free curbside pick-up for bulky brush debris until March 13. Residents are asked to place up to three cubic yards of brush, which is just over three roll-out carts in size, neatly on their curb on their normal garbage collection day. Branches and limbs should be cut to be no more than six inches in diameter and four feet in length.

Design and Pre-Construction Services Contracts in Place for New Police Headquarters
Contracts for design and pre-construction services for the Durham Police Department's new headquarters are in place. The City Council approved a $4.9 million contract for design services and approved a $215,000 contract for preconstruction services.


City Temporarily Changes Water Disinfection Process
A different disinfection method is temporarily being used to treat the City's water. Through the end of the month, the Water Management Department will not add ammonia as part of the disinfection process in order to meet annual state and federal water requirements. During this time, only chlorine will be used for disinfection, and the entire system will be flushed to disperse the chlorine.

Durham Honors Five Award Winners for Work to Improve Human Relations
The Human Relations Commission has recognized five award winners who have distinguished themselves by contributing their time and talents to promoting good human relations in Durham. They were recognized during the Human Relations Award Ceremony held on February 27.
