DURHAM, N.C. - Residents interested in discovering and protecting Durham's local waterways should mark their calendars now as Durham makes plans to celebrate "Creek Week."

City of Mayor William V. "Bill" Bell has proclaimed March 21-28 as "Creek Week" in Durham. The week kicks off Saturday at 2 p.m. with a "Connect with the Creek" event at Durham Central Park, and continues with educational programs, water treatment plant tours, nature walks, and volunteer cleanups through March 28.

"Connect with the Creek" will feature a parade with the Bulltown Strutters and costumes by Northeast Creek Stream Watch, food trucks, a maze, a scavenger hunt, giveaways, and water information. Artists will also use visual elements to highlight local water issues. "We are thrilled to auction two hand-painted rainwater cisterns at the event," said Laura Webb Smith, public education coordinator for the Stormwater and GIS Services Division of the City's Public Works Department. "One was painted by artist Edie Cohn and the other by volunteers at Recyclique. We'll also have murals by students from three Durham schools and blue markings to show where Ellerbe Creek flows through the park."

"Creek Week" is a community effort by 18 partners working together to provide opportunities for Durham residents to discover and explore local streams and to do their part to protect water resources.
