How does this fit with the proposed legislation, S617, that would require a two-thirds vote by the State Board of Transportation to approve any local government plan to reduce vehicle lanes to add bike lanes on a state road within their jurisdiction?

Fast Facts:

·
In 2015, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will resurface Business 15-501 from Tower Boulevard to University Drive.

·
The City of Durham Transportation Department and NCDOT are evaluating a roadway reconfiguration project on Business 15-501 (Chapel Hill Street Overpass
to University Drive) to improve safety and maintain traffic flow along the corridor.

·
The project will resurface the damaged road surface and restripe travel lanes. The proposed roadway reconfiguration will have one center turning
lane, one travel lane in each direction, bicycle lanes in both directions, and on-street parking accommodations.

·
Studies indicate this design will accommodate the current traffic volumes while improving the safety of people driving, walking, bicycling, and taking
transit. All work will be within the existing street and will not affect adjacent properties.

·
A drop-in informational meeting is being held next week and property owners and residents along the project corridor are encouraged to attend at
any time within the meeting timeframe. Handouts outlining project specifics will be available, and City staff members will be present to discuss project details and timelines as well as address any questions or concerns.

·
For additional information about the project, visit the
project website
or contact Peter Nicholas with the City’s Transportation Department at (919) 560-4366, ext. 36436 or by
email.
