Durham County Community Health Assessment Results Released

Durham, NC - April 2, 2015 - The release of the 2014 Durham County Community Health Assessment provides information on factors that affect the health of Durham County residents. The report comes on the heels of last week's ranking as the 11th healthiest county in North Carolina by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute County Health Rankings.
The triennial report effort was led by the Partnership for a Healthy Durham, Durham County Department of Public Health and Duke Medicine. Durham County organizations, agencies and community members contributed to finalizing the report. The two-year health assessment process involved conducting community surveys and listening sessions with hundreds of residents and analysis of health data and trends. The report shows between 2011 and 2014, Durham County improved in several areas such as secondhand smoke exposure, physical activity, cardiovascular disease mortality and alcohol consumption by high school students. "This 2014 Durham County Community Health Assessment reinforces what the County Health Rankings and RWJF Culture of Health Prize has shown, that Durham is doing well in many areas and has improved in several other areas," said Marissa Mortiboy, coordinator for the Partnership for a Healthy Durham. "There is still work to do, but Durham is headed in the right direction of building a culture of health through programs and policies." The six health priorities identified in the 2014 assessment; access to medical and dental care, HIV/sexually transmitted infections, obesity and chronic illness, substance use/mental health, poverty and education are a continuation of the priorities from the 2011 assessment. The Partnership for a Healthy Durham will develop community health improvement plans to address the priority areas.
