Good point Reyn.  Making disruptions minimal should be a high priority.  But the potential for disruptions alone shouldn’t be the reason to shelve this proposal altogether.

I agree but I also know how hard transitions such as this are on small businesses due to disruptions.  It isn't the end result that is costly but getting there.

Hillandale improvements a few years ago killed a lot of businesses and others are just beginning to recoup.

Anything the city can do to minimize disruption during the transition is crucial.

Be sure to read the comments from concerned citizens at the end of this article from the N&O.  15/501 between Chapel Hill Road and University Drive is disaster.  There is nothing desirable about that corridor, from a commuting standpoint.  It’s a raceway, and way under capacity.  With limited public funds, this is likely the only opportunity for the foreseeable future to make a positive difference there.  Don’t know why businesses think that they will suffer.  If it’s more attractive to more people because of these improvements, I could see business getting better.  Ask Geer St Garden, the Pit, or Torero’s Pizza how their business survives without a 4 lane highway in front of it.
