Durham Seeks ‘Finest Trees’ Nominations for New Tree Recognition Program
Nominations Due November 1st; Winners Announced Arbor Day 2016

DURHAM, N.C. – From now until November 1, tree lovers of all ages are invited to submit their nominations for significant trees in Durham as part of a new tree recognition program.

Durham's Finest Trees<http://nc-durham.civicplus.com/1580/Durhams-Finest-Trees> is a new program by the Durham Extension Master Gardeners<https://durhammastergardeners.wordpress.com/> in conjunction with Trees Across Durham<http://nc-durham.civicplus.com/273/Trees-Across-Durham>. The goal is to help promote awareness of trees in Durham as well as to catalog fine examples of magnificent tree specimens due to their size, setting, historical importance, or significant feature. Durham's Finest Trees program hopes to recognize significant trees in Durham County, promote discovery and ability to identify trees, and help preserve the best examples of specific tree species, particularly native and trees well adapted to Durham County.

Trees on private or public property can be nominated in each of the three categories: largest, historical, or meritorious. Preference will be given to native North Carolina tree species. Non-native trees may be considered if they are of a species, subspecies, variety or cultivar proven to be relatively long lived and well adapted to North Carolina.

After all nominations are received, a representative from the program will evaluate each nomination to verify the merits of the tree. The winners of each category will be announced during Durham’s annual Arbor Day celebration in spring 2016.

For more information about the new program, the nomination form, and instructions on how to nominate and measure a tree, visit Durham’s Finest Trees website<http://nc-durham.civicplus.com/1580/Durhams-Finest-Trees>, email<mailto:DurhamsFinestTrees at gmail.com>, or call (919) 560-7993.
