City of Durham Delays Opening on Monday, January 25
Crews Working Around the Clock to Clear City Streets; Motorists Urged to Use Caution Tomorrow Morning

DURHAM, N.C. - Most City of Durham offices, including City Hall and other non-emergency City operations, will be delayed until 10 a.m. on Monday, January 25, 2016, due to continued icy road conditions. Police, fire, and rescue services for life-threatening or in-progress emergencies may be reached by calling 9-1-1. Non-emergency problems or concerns may be directed to (919) 560-4600.

The City of Durham has been working around the clock to clear city streets after this weekend's winter storm. The City's Public Works Department<http://durhamnc.gov/506/Public-Works> has been salting and sanding city streets and operating in 12-hour shifts as crews tackled primary and secondary roads, bridges, and emergency routes. Crews were able to clear 90 percent of primary roads on Saturday, and began to work on secondary roads before the entire system froze overnight. Today, crews have been focusing on both the primary and secondary roads and hope to tackle third-tier/residential streets tonight and all day tomorrow. Durham motorists should be cautious of black ice tonight and tomorrow and remain off the roads if possible to allow clearing operations to proceed. Crews will continue road clearing operations for the next 24 hours in order to provide the best level of service possible under the current conditions.

The City's plan of action for clearing or reducing hazards on city streets is prioritized in the following order:
* Bridges and overpasses throughout the city.
* Major arterial streets within the city.
* Streets to essential health facilities, police and fire stations, and critical community facilities.
* Routes to two City fuel sites.
* Streets within the central business district.
* Clear access to Durham Public Schools.
* All residential areas with priority initially to passage of emergency vehicles and then to all traffic.

The department has been also coordinating with the local North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) maintenance office to ensure that State-maintained roads within the city limits are passable. Thus far, the NCDOT has been focused on NC Highway 147, I-40 and I-85 in the city. Earlier today, the NCDOT deployed additional resources to Durham County to clear other major state roads and highway entrance/exit ramps within the city limits.

A decision on the collection of curbside trash and recycling will be made early tomorrow morning after an assessment of street conditions, and if the landfill that accepts the City's trash will be open. Residents who did not receive collection on Friday, January 22 as well as regular Monday customers are asked to leave their carts on their curb by 7 a.m. on their scheduled collection day in the event collections can proceed. If collections must be suspended due to road conditions on Monday morning, residents should leave their carts at the curb.

Residents and City employees are encouraged to stay up-to-date on information about City operational hours as well as program and service changes through the following ways:
