Trees Charlotte website: http://treescharlotte.org/

Also I'm attaching a page (mike here- I cut and pasted it below since a
number of listserves can't take attachments) I wrote up as an aid for me in
talking/thinking about the tree issues-nothing about tree pruning since that
is so obvious! I assume most of you saw the article yesterday about Patrick
Baker reviewing the Duke Energy contract issue. I am going to write Tom
Bonfield about it.

Improving the canopy improves our air, therefore it can be thought of as
another government function such as clean water, dealing with sewage, roads
to drive on.....Can anyone in the group use social media to stir up interest
in our trees?

I will be out of town from tomorrow to February 8 and have been told that
internet access will be capricious & infrequent.

Durham's Tree Canopy

Is diminishing....h

Environmental Affairs Board called attention to this in a report:

To maintain canopy on public property, 1,680 trees must be planted a year &
750 diseased/

dying trees removed. Currently Urban Forestry planted 946 trees in 2014/15
and removed

about 500.

Recommendations: 1. Develop an Urban Forest Master Plan, 2. Plant at least
1,680 trees a

year, removing 750, and 3. Proper maintenance of all trees on public
property.

Need an inventory in order to develop a plan. Ideal would be to integrate it
with Public Works

data base so hard structures are included: water, sewer, etc.

Urban Forestry's budget has remained static since 2010/11. Staffing is such
that emergency

work calling in people results in overtime resulting in skeleton crews
during the week. Without

a proper budget, and adequate staffing, it is hard to get ahead of emergency
and other

requests.

Trees Across Durham has had success getting some grants and in working with
Keep Durham

Beautiful which can receive contributions as nonprofit organization and
which works to turn out

volunteers for tree planting. School yards have been the focus for Trees
Across Durham in the

last few years. They have planted 2,000 trees as of April 2015. Trees Across
Durham is

headquartered in the City/County Sustainability Office and does NOT have a
full time person.

Austin, Tx: "At the root of every vibrant city is an urban forest."
Charlotte, NC: Calls their

canopy "this most precious natural resource." Trees Across Durham lists
benefits: air and

water pollution reduction, storm water absorption, increased property
values, noise reduction,

stress relief, lower utility bills, shade..And also carbon sequestration,
absorption of

particulates....

Some of Durham's more affluent neighborhoods donate money for street trees
each year, but all

neighborhoods are not able to do this-nor should they. The benefits of trees
in a neighborhood

are proven-it is a matter of social justice for every Durham citizen to have
them.

Charlotte's Trees Charlotte is one example of a public/private partnership
dedicated to

increasing the tree canopy and education about the benefits of trees and
their care.
