Durham Kids Save Program Helps Families in East Durham Save for College
Families in East Durham have a new way to save for college. A kick-off event was held for Durham Kids Save<http://nc-durham.civicplus.com/DocumentCenter/View/8599> on January 14. Through the program, all eligible kindergartners at Y.E. Smith Elementary Museum School will have their own savings account. Grant From Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce to Benefit Durham Students
Students in the Durham Public Schools Career and College Promise Program will benefit from a grant<http://www.durhamnc.gov/agendas_new/2016/cma20160119/10869_MEMO_GREATER_DURHAM_CHAMBER_OF_382098_674061.PDF> from the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber's Legacy Foundation will donate $59,000 to support juniors and seniors in the Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics (STEAM) courses. Angier-Driver Streetscape Completed Soon
The final stage of work on the Angier-Driver Streetscape Project will soon be completed. Drainage improvements<http://www.durhamnc.gov/agendas_new/2016/cma20160119/10872_MEMO_ANGIER-DRIVER_STREETSCAPE_382144_673481.PDF> will begin to correct flooding at the intersection of Driver and Peabody streets as well as the North Carolina Railroad Company and Norfolk Southern Railway Company rights-of-way. This work was not approved by the railroads until last March and required design changes.
City Continues Partnership With Habitat For Humanity to Revitalize Neighborhoods
The City is continuing its partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Durham by providing approximately $183,000 of the City's Dedicated Housing Funds<http://www.durhamnc.gov/agendas_new/2016/cma20160119/10880_MEMO_AWARD_OF_DEDICATED_HOUSIN_382256_673795.PDF> to be used by Habitat to buy at least five single-family lots or homes suitable for renovation in Northeast Central Durham. Habitat will also use $500,000 in federal housing funds<http://www.durhamnc.gov/agendas_new/2016/cma20160119/10881_MEMO_AWARD_OF_DEDICATED_HOUSIN_382259_673798.PDF> to buy up to 11 single-family vacant lots throughout Southwest Central Durham. All of these homes will support the creation of more affordable housing and will also be sold to first-time homebuyers.
