Announcing a new show opening at the Pleiades Gallery, February 10th, 2016.

“Durham under Development” asked artists what they see, hear, sense, and
feel about Development in Durham. We asked for their artistic reaction to
what is happening in the community and their visions of what might happen
going forward.

The Pleiades Gallery and Aaron Mandel are pleased to present a special
exhibit, “Durham under Development” February 11th though March 6th, 2016.


“Durham under Development” is show that recognizes it is a time of
transition in Durham. The process is unfinished, the result undetermined.
We asked artists what do they see, hear, sense, and feel about Development.
We asked for their artistic reaction to what is happening in the community
and their visions of what might happen going forward. We asked them to
contribute to the conversation about these changes.


Juried by The Pleiades Gallery, Aaron Mandel, community activist, Carter
Cue, and development expert, Josh Parker, “Durham under Development”
selected works by fifteen fantastic artists and the nine outstanding
artists-in-residence at The Pleiades Gallery on this theme.


Aaron Mandel will host a slideshow syncopated to the music of Treee City
Beats featuring hundreds of pictures of “Durham under Development” shot
over the last six years.


It is our goal to have as many voices as possible contribute to the
discussion facilitated by the art curated for “Durham under Development”.
To that end, all events associated with show will be archived. Written and
audio comments from the public will be solicited.​

*ABOUT PLEIADES GALLERY: *Pleiades is a community-focused, artist-driven
contemporary art gallery founded in 2013. Located in the heart of downtown
Durham, Pleiades builds relationships between artists and the community.

*ABOUT AARON MANDEL: *Aaron Mandel is a writer and the long-time publisher
of the Clarion Content, a Durham, North Carolina based, cultural and
political on-line magazine. Over the last eight years he has written
hundreds of articles about Durham, and its residents and places, while the
Clarion Content has published more than twenty-five terrific local writers
and distinguished guest columnists, garnered hundreds of thousands of
views, and broken important news stories.


Mandel has volunteered for the Durham Mighty Pen Literacy Project, served
as the President of the Board of Sustain-A-Bull Durham, and presented to
Durham Chamber of Commerce Chamber U on “New Media”. Mandel holds a BA in
History and Religious Studies with a certificate in Uralic-Altaic Studies
from Indiana University.
