Selection Process for Next Police Chief Moves Forward with Resident Input
The selection process for Durham's next police chief<http://nc-durham.civicplus.com/DocumentCenter/View/9800> is continuing to move forward. Atlanta Police Department Deputy Chief Cerelyn Davis and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Major Michael Smathers took part in a April 6 community forum where they answered questions submitted by residents. City Council Adopts Budget Development Guidelines
The City administration now has guidelines<http://www.durhamnc.gov/agendas_new/2016/cm20160404/11001_OTHER_BUDGET_DEVELOPMENT_GUIDEL_385658_685528.PDF> in place for the budget development process. Among the guidelines for revenue sources, the tax rate for the general fund will not exceed the current rate of 53.84 cents per $100 of assessed value. For expenditures, funding for 20 additional sworn police officers will be included, deferred maintenance funding will increase from $600,000 to $700,000, and dedicated street resurfacing funding will increase from $2 million to $3 million.

City Council Works to Define Gentrification in Durham
As part of its effort to address the need for more affordable housing, the City Council is focusing on the part gentrification plays in that dynamic. Mayor William V. "Bill" Bell led a discussion on defining gentrification in Durham. Mayor Bell also wants to have maps developed that show the neighborhoods impacted to help City Council dive deeper into the issue and determine how it can best be addressed.


Development of Eno River Watershed Plan Set to Get Underway
The development of the Eno River Watershed Plan<http://www.durhamnc.gov/agendas_new/2016/cm20160404/11019_MEMO_ENO_RIVER_WATERSHED_PLAN__385749_684905.PDF> is set to get underway. The plan will identify and model potential projects to help reduce nitrogen and phosphorus loading from the Eno River into Falls Lake. The City Council approved spending $2.4 million on planning and design services for the project.
