Campus Hills Pool Improvements Move Forward
Significant improvements to Campus Hills Pool<http://www.durhamnc.gov/agendas_new/2016/cma20160404/11017_MEMO_CAMPUS_HILLS_POOL_DESIGN__385743_684278.PDF> at the I.R. Holmes Sr. Recreation Center are moving forward. The need for the improvements was identified in the Durham Swimming Pools Assessment Study and are related to dehumidification, improved air quality, lighting, addition of code-compliant ramps at emergency exits, and repainting of the ceiling.
2016 Earth Day Festival April 23
The 2016 Earth Day Festival<http://durhamnc.gov/1003/Earth-Day> will be held at Rock Quarry Park on Saturday, April 23 from noon to 5 p.m. The free event will feature live music; a market for local green goods, crafts, and environmental art; a showcase of environmentally-friendly businesses and organizations; a kids' zone; and an Earth Day parade. A free e-waste recycling and paper shredding drive will also be held at Durham County Stadium.
City Works to Identify Unknown Source of Nitrogen in Lower Ellerbe Creek
The City is working to identify an unknown source of nitrogen in lower Ellerbe Creek. A study of groundwater discharge from the creek<http://www.durhamnc.gov/agendas_new/2016/cma20160404/10965_MEMO_USGS_ELLERBE_GW-SW_STUDY_385651_684563.PDF> will be conducted to determine if nutrients in the groundwater are the source of the nitrogen. The results of the study could affect strategies the City and County may use to meet existing development reductions for the Falls Lake Nutrient Management Strategy.
Projects Serving Durham's Homeless Receive Federal Funds
Twelve projects<http://durhamnc.gov/DocumentCenter/View/9555> that serve the needs of Durham's homeless are receiving federal funds to help with their efforts. The providers of those projects are part of Durham's Continuum of Care Program and have been awarded $968,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
