Correction: the buffer rules would also sunset in 2019, not immediately, even if no alternative is in place.

(Much) more on this to follow, but the Senate today unveiled its budget.
The Senate budget contains provisions that would:
* Delay implementation of the Jordan lake rules for yet another year (2019). But this time, it's not just Jordan Lake that won't be cleaned up. The provision would prevent implementation of the Falls Lake rules on the same timetable. In 2019, the clean-up rules for both lakes would sunset.
* Gets rid of state-required buffers. Yes, the buffers that are so cost-effective at keeping agricultural, residential and commercial runoff out of the Neuse and Tar-Pam would be repealed upon ratification of the budget. So would the Catawba riparian buffer rules. So would the protections that allowed Randleman Dam to come on line and be maintained as a water source.
Note that this is not a regulatory reform or other bill that may or may not be going anywhere. It's the Senate's budget, which will be debated the remainder of the week.
Don't wait for an action alert. Please contact your state senator today and let him or her know what you think about this budget provision.
Thanks.
