Durham Hosts Central Park Waterline Replacement Project Meeting June 28

DURHAM, N.C. - The City of Durham Water Management Department will be kicking off the next phase of waterline rehabilitation in the downtown area when the Central Park Waterline Replacement project<https://durhamnc.gov/1251/Durham-Central-Park-Waterline-Replacemen> goes out to bid later this year.

The design phase of this project is now complete and the City is seeking to share information and gain feedback from area residents and business owners through an open house-style public meeting on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Durham Armory, 220 Foster Street.

During the meeting, staff will share more details about this project and the construction timeline, which will replace waterlines that were originally constructed in the 1910s. The work will include replacing approximately 17,000 linear feet of waterlines and approximately 3,000 linear feet of gravity sewer main within the Central Park district on the northern edge of downtown. The project will cost an estimated $11.5 million and will be paid for by previously authorized capital improvement program (CIP) funds.

While the work will take place on public property, there will be changes in traffic patterns, detours, and temporary limited access to some properties as well as planned water service disruptions. Potential noise impacts throughout the area during construction should also be expected. In addition to ongoing public meetings, the City and its contractors will inform nearby property owners, residents, and visitors in this area with door hangers, postcards, signage, and other notifications as the project progresses.
