Durham County Government Press Release
Durham Social Services Hosts Community Listening Session on Aging Populations
[Formal Shield]
Durham, NC - August 4, 2016 ? On August 9th, 2016 from 9:00am - 11:00am Durham County DSS joins the NC DHHS Division of Aging and Adult Services to host a community-wide listening session on the needs of our aging population. This event will be held in the Commissioners Chambers on the 2nd Floor of 200 E. Main Street. Durham County is one of only nine (9) counties to host one of these listening sessions.
This listening session will give important stakeholders in Durham (and surrounding communities) an opportunity to share their voices regarding the challenges in serving and protecting vulnerable populations. State officials, including the Deputy Secretary for DHHS and Division Directors, and Durham County Department of Social Services leadership will be present to hear from the Durham community. This session, and the sessions throughout the state, will go a long way in informing the work the Department of Health and Human Services develops to address the growing demand for Adult Protective and Guardianship services.
The state of North Carolina, through its Division of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS), recognizes that the shift in population is going to have an impact upon local communities and in particular on departments of social services. To that end, DAAS, along with NC county departments of social services, is hosting "Listening Sessions" throughout the state. These sessions will focus on Adult Protective Services and Guardianship, as these are the services most directly impacted with protecting older and disabled adults' rights. Furthermore, Durham has recognized the need and has begun addressing this significant change through collaborations, partnerships, and the Aging Well in Durham Summit that the Durham County Department of Social Services has co-sponsored and hosted.
