I just recieved this message and my blood just boils. See below...

These are the shenanigans we as 'David' in this Goliath battle have to be
prepared for from the Durham Rescue Mission's. The push to stop progress
is a progressive city. As a developer trying to use their non profit as a
shield to do what ever they want in the community of formally neglected.

Please note if you haven't already penned a note to city council on this
issue please consider taking a moment to do so please.

I am writing to urge the City Council members to vote YES in favor of the
Golden Belt Historic District with the boundaries as recommended by the MDM
Historic Consultants, the City Planning staff along with the Historic
Preservation Commission and Planning Commission. This includes all of the
designated areas on the East side of Alston Avenue.

If you have sent one already send another regarding Saving our City's Last
intact Mill Village from the Mills!

> Dear Friend:

> I need your help and 2 minutes of your time. Would you kindly send an
email the Durham City Council? In your email, ask them to exclude the
Durham Rescue Mission from the proposed Golden Belt Historic District. The
Mission has plans to build a community center to house its four annual
events--Back to School, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter celebrations.
These events are now held outside regardless of the weather.
>
> The Mission also has an outstanding record of serving Durham's population
facing the greatest challenges of homelessness, alcoholism, and poverty.
Being included in the historic district would add restrictions that would
hinder plans to build the community center.
>
> Below are three email examples. Simply cut and paste the email of your
choice into a new email and send to the following council members:
>
> Mayor Bill Bell bill.bell at durhamnc.gov
> Cora Cole McFadden cora.cole-mcfadden at durhamnc.gov
> Eddie Davis eddie.davis at durhamnc.gov
> Jillian Johnson jillian.johnson at durhamnc.gov
> Don Moffitt don.moffitt at durhamnc.gov
> Charlie Reece charlie.reece at durhamnc.gov
> Steve Schewel steve.schewel at durhamnc.gov

> Our goal is to get a couple of hundred emails sent as a "Labor Day
Weekend Email Blitz" ending Tuesday, September 6 at 3pm. Please have a
similar subject line (or the same one). Send your email today and ask
family and friends to do the same.

> EXAMPLE 1:
> I am a friend of the Durham Rescue Mission and I am contacting you
regarding the proposal to create a local historic district in the Golden
Belt neighborhood. I support you excluding all of the Durham Rescue
Mission’s property on the East side of Hwy 55 so their long range plans to
build a community center and affordable housing will not be hindered by
including this property in the local historic district.
>
> I very much appreciate your positive vote for the Durham Rescue Mission
vision to serve our community.

> EMAIL EXAMPLE 2:
> Please exclude all of the Durham Rescue Mission’s property on the East
Side of Hwy 55 from the proposed Local Historic District for the Golden
Belt Neighborhood.
>
> Thank you for your vote of confidence for the future plans of the Durham
Rescue Mission.

>
> EMAIL EXAMPLE 3
> Please work with the Durham Rescue Mission to exclude all of their
property on the East side of Hwy 55 from the Golden Belt local historic
district. They have plans to build a community center and affordable
housing on this property. If it is included in the historic district they
will not be able to build the community center and affordable housing
construction cost will be greatly inflated because of the extra
requirements of the local historic district.
>
> Your vote to exclude DRM is a vote for the future of the Durham Rescue
Mission.
