2016 CityCamp focus on community innovation and collaboration

Raleigh, NC: CityCamp NC, an event developed to bring citizens, government, and businesses together to openly innovate on next generation solutions for communities, has announced September 22-24, 2016 as the official dates for the sixth annual conference. CityCamp NC is part of NC Open Pass<http://ncopenpass.com/> and will take place in downtown Raleigh at Nash Hall, a gathering space focused on helping create positive community changes. The event will start on Thursday evening, September 22nd, with a round of lightning talks, a "Taste of CityCamp," and networking, and will conclude on September 24th with a code sprint and NC DataJam competition. New for this year's event is the combining of forces between CityCamp NC and NC Datapalooza. The NC DataJam event, the kick off for the NC Datapalooza open data competition, will coincide with the CityCamp NC hackathon, which will occur on Saturday, September 24th. Teams emerging from CityCamp NC and NC DataJam will have a chance to pitch their NC Datapalooza project at All Things Open before the NC Datapalooza finale in November.

Jason Hibbets, CityCamp NC co-chair, notes that the three day, participant-driven, event will begin with a kick off at Nash Hall featuring 5-minute lightning talks and "A Taste of CityCamp" meant to inspire ideas before the unconference and hackathon. "We have speakers from across the region and across North Carolina getting CityCamp NC 2016 started off with excitement across a variety of topics," said Hibbets. "You can expect to hear from a variety of speakers presenting challenges from North Carolina communities including the United Way, Salvation Army, and Wake County. We expect a good mix of ideas and inspiration." Thursday evening's events will begin at 6:00 p.m. Registration<http://citycampnc.org/register/> for the kickoff is free for the lightning talks and networking, but is limited to 200 registered participants.

The CityCamp NC program continues on Friday, September 23, 2016 beginning at 9:00 a.m. when unconference pitches begin at Nash Hall. Once voted upon by the attendees, the unconference agenda will be set and sessions will be held throughout the afternoon. Some of the panels and speakers on Friday leading up to the unconference include:
*         Public CIO Panel who will include representatives from Greensboro, NC Central University, Raleigh, and Wake County
*         Amy Gaskins, Panopticon Global
*         J Erik Garr, Google Fiber
*         Jen Pahlka, Founder and Executive Director of Code for America

Saturday, September 24, 2016, is the CityCamp NC code sprint and NC DataJam competition. Code for America brigades from all of North Carolina will participate in a code sprint to advance their projects. NC DataJam is co-located with this year's code sprint, CityCampers will also be able to participate in the NC Datapalooza<http://www.ncdatapalooza.com/> competition kickoff. Teams develop their ideas into reality and begin prototyping for the competition. Presentations and judging will be held on Saturday afternoon.

CityCamp NC remains committed to delivering incredibly high participant value that is not dependent on hefty registration fees. Thanks to the generosity of many sponsors, including ESRI, Raleigh and Wake Economic Development, Red Hat, All Things Open, HQ Raleigh, Panopticon Global, Department of Marketing, and HomeAdvisor, registration for the unconference remains at only $20.00 for general admission. Government employees receive discounted admission at $10.00. Students with valid identification are free. Elected officials are free. All levels of registration can be completed online at http://citycampnc.org/register/. Walk-up registration may be available the day of the event as space permits, but is not guaranteed.
