It's starting to feel a little bit like Fall. That means it's time to start thinking about putting up cankerworm bands on trees! Cankerworms are those little, green inchworms that fall from the trees in the spring and get all over everything and everyone. Not only are they annoying, but they can cause harm to trees by eating all their leaves. The best way to control these worms is to band the trees with sticky stuff to catch the female moths before they lay their eggs in the fall.
It is very important for all or most of the trees in an area/neighborhood to be banded to be effective. If only a few trees are banded, then the worms will move from the unprotected trees to the protected ones, making the whole effort less effective. We encourage neighborhoods to organize tree banding parties to help band most of the trees in their area.
Trees Across Durham will be hosting 5 workshops on cankerworms and how to band a tree in October.
