Durham Recognized in Top 50 for Green Vehicle Fleets

Durham Only North Carolina City to Make the List

DURHAM, N.C. - The City of Durham Fleet Management Department has once again received recognition for its efforts to have one of the greenest government vehicle fleets in North America.

The City's Fleet Management Department was awarded 37th place in the Government Green Fleet(tm) Awards<http://the100best.com/gf_winners_2016.htm> from Green Fleet Magazine, Green Fleet Conference organizers, and the 100 Best Fleets in North America. Durham is the only city in North Carolina to make the list, and this is the fourth consecutive year that the Fleet Management Department has been named to the Top 50.

According to Director Joe Clark<mailto:joe.clark at durhamnc.gov> with the City's Fleet Management Department, this award distinguishes Durham's fleet as one of the greenest and most efficient in the nation. "With thousands of public fleets in North America, advancing our rank to 37th best fleet from 45th last year is a tremendous honor," Clark said. "This award demonstrates the dedication to service that our employees embody and the drive to be a leader among public fleets. We recognize the importance of our role in reducing our carbon footprint and protecting Durham's environment while saving public resources."

The Government Green Fleet Award is a comprehensive set of criteria tailored around the challenges and requirements of the government fleet manager. The award is given based on several key evaluation categories including fuels and emissions, policy and planning, fleet composition, fleet utilization, education, executive and employee involvement, and supporting programs. The Government Green Fleet Award is open to the more than 38,000 federal, state, and local government fleets in North America.

This is the third award the City's Fleet Management Department has received this year. In April 2016, the department was recognized as the 49th Best Fleet in the North America by the 100 Best Fleets<http://www.the100bestfleets.com/100_winners_2016.htm> award and Governing magazine, and as another Top 50 Fleet with a Leading Fleets<http://www.government-fleet.com/news/story/2016/04/announcing-the-2016-leading-fleets.aspx> award from Government Fleet magazine. In addition, the department was recognized this year in The Municipal article "Planning and benchmarking drive Durham fleet into winner's circle"<http://www.themunicipal.com/2016/04/planning-and-benchmarking-drive-durham-fleet-into-winners-circle/> and in the Government Fleet article "13 Bright Ideas for Fleet Improvement."<http://www.government-fleet.com/channel/operations/article/story/2016/09/13-bright-ideas-for-fleet-improvement.aspx>
