Several Sidewalk Projects Move Ahead Throughout City
Several sidewalk projects are moving ahead throughout the city. Durham has received federal funding for five projects that were identified in the DurhamWalks! Pedestrian Plan. Find out where these projects are located.
City to Buy Surplus Properties to Preserve Affordable Housing
As part of its effort to preserve affordable housing in Durham, the City is buying two surplus properties<http://cityordinances.durhamnc.gov/OnBaseAgendaOnline/Documents/ViewDocument/Final-Published%20Attachment%20-%2011500%20-%20MEMO%20-%20COUNTY-OWNED%20PROPERTY%20FOR%20AFFORDABLE.pdf?meetingId=157&documentType=Agenda&itemId=2473&publishId=10691&isSection=false> from the County. The vacant lots are being purchased for a total of $19,000. Find out where the properties are located and what the City wants to do with them.
Fire Department Supports Creation of High School Fire Academy
The Durham Fire Department is supporting the creation of a high school fire academy through the donation of surplus fire equipment<http://cityordinances.durhamnc.gov/OnBaseAgendaOnline/Documents/ViewDocument/Final-Published%20Attachment%20-%2011490%20-%20MEMO%20-%20DFD%20AND%20DPS%20ON%20DONATION%20OF%20EQU.pdf?meetingId=157&documentType=Agenda&itemId=2468&publishId=10728&isSection=false> to Durham Public Schools. The academy will train high school students in basic firefighting techniques and emergency medical care. Students completing the program will achieve state certifications needed to be hired by local fire departments.
Police Department to Require Officers to Use Body-Worn Cameras
The Durham Police Department will soon require many of its sworn officers to use body-worn cameras<http://cityordinances.durhamnc.gov/OnBaseAgendaOnline/Documents/ViewDocument/Final-Published%20Attachment%20-%2011454%20-%20MEMO-(CORRECTED)%20-%20PURCHASE%20BODY%20WORN%20CAMER.pdf?meetingId=157&documentType=Agenda&itemId=2573&publishId=10749&isSection=false>. The City Council recently approved spending $1.4 million over five years to buy up to 530 cameras. They will be worn by all sworn officers at the rank of captain and below.
