Durham City-County Planning Director Announced

DURHAM, N.C. - Assistant Planning Director Patrick O. Young has been named director of the Durham City-County Planning Department by City Manager Thomas J. Bonfield and County Manager Wendell M. Davis.

Young has more than 20 years of experience as a professional urban planner and has been with the Durham City-County Planning Department as an assistant director since 2008. Young has led the efforts to implement the new Durham City-County Development Services Center, which will open on Monday, April 3, 2017. The Center creates a one-stop shop for information and assistance with the development review process. Young was also a leader in efforts to analyze and assess policy and fiscal tools to help create affordable housing in Durham.

Prior to coming to Durham, he was the planning and inspections director for Franklin County, N.C. and worked as a senior planner and project manager for Holland Consulting Planners of Wilmington, N.C. He holds a master's degree in Urban and Regional Planning with a specialization in growth management from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla.

Young is a member of American Institute of Certified Planners, the Triangle Chapter of the Urban Land Institute, and the North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association. He holds a certificate in City and County Administration from the School of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and has guest lectured at the school on a variety of urban planning matters.

Young succeeds Steven L. Medlin, who retired in December 2016, after 30 years of service to the Durham City-County Planning Department. His appointment is effective Monday, April 10, 2017.
