The sponsors scurried back to committee last week, responding to the bright lights and pressure being put on them. Please keep up this pressure.

Regards, pat

Subject: Ask NC House to reject billboard industry favoritism

Bill would burden taxpayers, local govt, scenery

Dear Patricia,

[Not pretty, is it?]The NC House is about to consider a bill that would give special treatment to North Carolina's billboard industry, while taking away local control of signage, allowing more digital billboards and more cutting of trees along our highways.

House Bill 581<http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=e121f1a392186d04e298535caaebcd4f7b391b9c5619b407eceaa2df8b5028fcb0634c3a4f9a7b41af4273c357bec9a60cac868dbdf201d9> would make it easier and cheaper for billboard companies to cut down the public's trees on roadsides. The bill would require the state Department of Transportation to compensate billboard companies if their signs must be moved - but the taxpayer-funded compensation would be based on the projected income from the advertising, not the much lower property value of the signs. This special treatment would be unique to billboards and unfair to other businesses and property owners that also sometimes face condemnation.

H 581 also would insert the Legislature into litigation pending before the NC Supreme Court. The high court is considering a ruling by the NC Court of Appeals, which struck down an award of lost advertising rental income to a billboard company when the land on which a billboard was located was condemned.

Tell your state representative that the billboard industry doesn't deserve special privileges at the expense of North Carolina's scenery, local government authority, and taxpayers. Urge your lawmaker to vote against H 581<http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=e121f1a392186d048c16b0766add801fc59d181796fd1b18f7acd58b1cd39c11b3943a99d84ee78d5ac07e03bb2160eca913bdcc7d4d2ab8>!

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Margaret Lillard
