City to Host Durham Belt Line Master Plan Visioning Workshop

DURHAM, N.C. - Rail-to-trail enthusiasts, bicyclists, pedestrians and residents interested in the creation of the Durham Belt Line Master Plan<https://durhambeltline.com/> should mark their calendars now to attend a visioning workshop next month.

The City of Durham is hosting a public visioning workshop on Wednesday, September 6 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Durham Armory, located at 212 Foster St. in downtown Durham. Parking<http://www.parkdurham.org/> is available on the street or at the Durham Centre Parking Garage, located at 300 W. Morgan St. Light refreshments will be served and families are welcome. Participants will also be able to enter drawings for prizes from local businesses.

The workshop will be an open house-style meeting, and participants are invited to stop in at any time to participate in activities designed to generate ideas, discuss concerns and review trends in downtown trails, greenways and linear parks. Information and the history of the 2.2-mile Belt Line rail corridor will also be provided to help serve as a foundation to envision this future trail, greenway or linear park.

For many years, there has been interest in converting the Belt Line corridor into a trail-and-green space connection between downtown and neighborhoods to the north and east. In 2014, the City was awarded $222,700 in funding through the federal TIGER grant program to prepare the master plan, with a local match of $75,000 from the City. The master plan project began in April 2017, and will be completed in 2018.

Residents unable attend this workshop may also look for displays at the Durham Farmers Market, CenterFest, and other venues for an opportunity to provide input, or visit https://durhambeltline.com from August 30 until October 3 to complete a short survey.
