Most City of Durham Offices Closed for Christmas and New Year’s
Residents Asked to Note Changes in City-Provided Services

DURHAM, N.C. – Most City of Durham offices, including City Hall and other non-emergency City operations, will be closed on Monday, December 25, Tuesday, December 26, and Monday, January 1 for Christmas and New Year’s<http://bit.ly/2AFGXpN>. Police, fire, and rescue services for life-threatening or in-progress emergencies may be reached by calling 911. Non-emergency concerns may be directed to (919) 560-4600. Residents are asked to make note of the following changes in other City-provided services and programs.

Solid Waste, Recycling, Yard Waste, and Bulky Item Curbside Collections
The Solid Waste Management Department<http://durhamnc.gov/832/Solid-Waste-Management> will operate under its normal collection schedules the week of December 18−22. The department will be closed on December 25 and January 1. As a result, trash and recycling collections will be delayed by one business day for the weeks of December 25−December 29 and January 1−January 5. Yard waste and bulky items collections will operate under their normal collection schedules the week of January 1−January 5. The Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, Yard Waste Facility, and the Household Hazardous Waste Center<http://nc-durham.civicplus.com/898/Disposal-Facilities> will be closed on December 23, December 25, and January 1. These facilities will operate under their regular schedules on December 26 and December 30.

Residents are reminded to place their carts at the curb by 6 a.m. the day of their scheduled collections and to recycle as much as possible during the holiday season. Paper holiday waste, including wrapping paper (non-metallic only), cardboard boxes, and greeting cards may be placed in the blue recycling cart. For more information about items accepted for curbside recycling as well as how to sign up for collection day alerts and reminders for holiday service changes, visit the department’s webpage<http://durhamnc.gov/3025/Find-Your-Collection-Day>.

Curbside Collection of Live Christmas Trees
Non-Yard Waste customers must contact Durham One Call<http://durhamnc.gov/1439/Durham-One-Call> at (919) 560-1200 to request a curbside collection of their live Christmas tree. All service requests must be received no later than the end of business on February 1. Once received, service requests will be scheduled for the next available Saturday collection on either January 13, January 27 or February 3.

Yard Waste customers<http://durhamnc.gov/891/Yard-Waste> should place their live trees at the curb on their scheduled collection day. Tree locations will be noted by the weekly collection crews and added to the next available Saturday collection day on either January 13, January 27 or February 3. A tree collection will not count toward free brush collections for yard waste customers.

Requirements for live Christmas tree disposal are as follows: trees taller than six feet must be cut in half; all decorations including tinsel, lights, garland, ornaments, nails, stands, and hardware must be removed. Trees should not be placed in bags.

In addition to free curbside collections, residents may drop off their live Christmas trees at the City’s Waste Disposal and Recycling Center<http://durhamnc.gov/878/Waste-Disposal-Recycling-Center> for no charge from January 2 until February 3. Trees delivered after February 3 will be subject to the usual yard waste disposal fees.
