New LED Lighting Coming to the Chapel Hill Street Parking Garage Next Week

DURHAM, N.C. - Visitors using the City of Durham's Chapel Hill Street Parking Garage<http://www.parkdurham.org/> will soon experience a brighter environment thanks to a lighting upgrade project that begins next week.

The Chapel Hill Street Parking Garage is the last of the City's parking garages to be upgraded to LED lighting, and overnight work will begin on Monday, March 5 beginning at 7 p.m. Work is planned to continue over four nights from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. The garage will remain open during this project, and visitors are asked to be mindful of this construction work when parking in the garage at night throughout the duration of this project.

For the Chapel Hill Street Parking Garage project, the City estimates an annual savings of 200,000kWh or about $12,000 in electric costs with the installation of this new lighting. LED lighting has already been installed in the City's Church Street Parking Garage, Corcoran Street Parking Garage, Durham Centre Parking Garage, and the City Hall Annex Parking Garage.

The City's General Services Department teamed with the City's Transportation Department, Republic Parking System, and Duke Energy to bring this lighting upgrade to the Chapel Hill Street Parking Garage, with 75 percent of this $96,636 project being funded through the Duke Energy Small Business Energy Saver Program.

This Duke Energy program has also been used to help pay for LED lighting projects at the City's Fleet Management Department; Durham Parks and Recreation's Edison Johnson Recreation and Aquatics Center and Weaver Street Recreation Center; Durham Fire Department's Administration Building and Fire Station 11; and the Public Works Department's Operations Center.

This is not the only infrastructure maintenance that's taken place at the Chapel Hill Street Parking Garage, which contains 328 parking spaces. Designed and built in 1968, the garage underwent structural and ramp repairs in 2013 and 2014. In addition to this LED lighting project, the garage is also now undergoing elevator upgrades<http://durhamnc.gov/2960/Downtown-Parking-Deck-Elevator-Moderniza>, and later this year, will receive stairwell improvements. The garage's adjacent surface lot, which contains an additional 52 parking spaces, is also receiving pole-light upgrades.
