Durham Seeks Input on Zoning Changes to Expand Housing Choices

DURHAM, N.C. - Fast-paced population growth, limited availability of developable tracts, and a renewed preference for in-town living has led to a housing availability and affordability challenge<http://durhamnc.gov/DocumentCenter/View/21797/Expanding-Housing-Choices-Infographics> for Durham.

To address this issue, the Durham City-County Planning Department is now seeking input on changes that are needed to Durham's existing zoning rules to help eliminate regulatory barriers and expand housing options<http://durhamnc.gov/3679/Expanding-Housing-Choices>.

According to Hannah Jacobson, senior planner with the Durham City-County Planning Department, input from residents and other stakeholders is critical for this reassessment, which is needed to help ensure Durham has many types of housing available for residents now and in the future. "Over time, zoning rules have restricted development in many neighborhoods almost exclusively to single-family dwellings, eliminating many of the small-scale and often more affordable multifamily options that once existed," Jacobson said. "Often referred to as 'missing middle' housing, this project will explore ways to eliminate regulatory barriers and expand the choices that people have when it comes to housing types."

The department is now seeking input through an online Expanding Housing Choice survey at https://www.publicinput.com/2771, and by setting up a booth and meeting one-on-one with Durham residents during the following events this summer:

*        Durham Farmers Market<http://www.durhamfarmersmarket.com/>: Saturday, June 23 from 9 a.m. to noon at Durham Central Park, 501 Foster St.

*        Rock the Park Concert & Movie Series<https://durhamnc.gov/3558/Rock-the-Park-Concert-Movie-Series>: Saturday, July 7 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Forest Hills Park, 1639 University Dr.

*        Rock the Park Concert & Movie Series<https://durhamnc.gov/3558/Rock-the-Park-Concert-Movie-Series>: Saturday, August 4 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Southern Boundaries Park, 100 Third Fork Rd.

*        Durham Latino Festival<https://durhamnc.gov/3548/Durham-Latino-Festival>: Saturday, August 11 from noon to 5 p.m. at Rock Quarry Park, 701 Stadium Dr.

Additional event dates may be added throughout the summer, and the deadline to complete the online survey is August 15, 2018.
