BOCC Regular Session Highlights from July 23rd



Durham, NC - The Durham Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) met on Monday, July 23, 2018, in Regular Session. Highlights of the meeting include:



  *   The Board held a Closed Session at 5 p.m.
  *   Board Chair Wendy Jacobs called the regular meeting to order at 7 p.m.
  *   Durham County Commissioners approved a resolution honoring the remarkable life of Mrs. Peggy Tapp, who passed earlier this year. She was a longtime businesswoman and owner of the historic Chicken Hut, known for its unique brand of southern comfort food. Mrs. Tapp leaves a legacy of love and compassion for her community. Her son Claiborne Tapp III received the resolution honoring his mother.
  *   The Board also approved a resolution honoring the 100th Birthday of Mrs. Cora Jones "Boot" McLeod. During her productive years, she owned two successful businesses: Tip Top Beauty Shop and McLeod's Beauty Nook. Mrs. McLeod was gracious in receiving her resolution.
  *   Commissioners appointed Commissioner James Hill as the voting delegate at the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) Annual Conference to be held August 23-25 in Catawba County.
  *   The Board authorized execution of a contract amendment with O'Brien /Atkins Associates P.A for additional Design Services for the 7th Floor upfit to the Administration Building II renovation in the amount of $314,330.
  *   The Board held a public hearing and approved the allocation of $175,000 in Economic Development Investment Funds to AveXis, Inc., utilizing funds provided as a donation to Durham County by Clarion Partners via the Chamber of Commerce. AveXis, Inc., a clinical-stage gene therapy company that develops treatments for rare and life-threatening neurological diseases, will locate a new manufacturing center in Durham County. The company expects to invest nearly $55 million in the facility as well as create 200 new jobs.
  *   Commissioners held a public hearing also approving the allocation of a total of $220,000 in Economic Development Investment funds to LabCorp utilizing funds provided as a donation to Durham County by Karlin Real Estate via the Chamber of Commerce. The global life sciences company known for its world-class clinical laboratory and drug development services, will locate a new operations center in Durham County, creating 422 jobs and invest $30 million in a Durham facility on the Parmer RTP campus.
  *   Finally, the Board held a public hearing and voted to allocate $50,000 in Economic Development Investment funds to Sensus USA, Inc., utilizing funds provided as a donation to Durham County by Longfellow Real Estate Partners via the Chamber of Commerce. Sensus USA, Inc., a provider of advanced metering technologies to utilities and municipalities, will expand its current operations in Durham County, creating 301 new jobs over five years. The company will invest $4 million in North Carolina by the end of 2019.
  *   Commissioners appointed members to the following boards:
     *   Alcoholic Beverage Control Board - Ryan Urquhart and Beverly Thorpe
     *   Convention Center Authority - Craig Spitzer
     *   Criminal Justice Advisory Board - Tamario Howze
     *   Dangerous Dog Appeal Board - Motiryo Keambiroiro
     *   Durham-Wake Counties Research and Production Service District - Chris Buchholtz, Ginger Dosier and Karen Long
     *   Environmental Affairs Board - Laura Marie Davis
     *   Library Board of Trustees - Hank Kinsley
     *   Sports Commission - Bill Kalkhof
