Durham Begins Construction Project to Stabilize Carpenter Fletcher Road
Week-Long Repair Near N.C. Hwy. 55 Will Impact Traffic
DURHAM, N.C. - On Tuesday, July 31, a nearly week-long construction project will begin to stabilize a stormwater pipe and the roadway<http://durhamnc.gov/3669> on Carpenter Fletcher Road near N.C. Highway 55 in Durham.

During this timeframe, Carpenter Fletcher Road between N.C. Highway 55 and Loyal Avenue will be limited to one lane of traffic from 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily between July 31 and August 3. Motorists and cyclists should expect delays in this area during this lane closure.

Earlier this summer, intense storms damaged the stormwater pipe and road embankment on this section of Carpenter Fletcher Road. Maintenance crews from the City of Durham Public Works Department stabilized the area, while engineers planned a longer-term solution. The repairs that begin next week will stabilize Carpenter Fletcher Road by means of void filling and soil stabilization using a high-density polyurethane system. The cost to repair the pipe and road is $69,264.

According to Dana Hornkohl, project manager with the City's Public Works Department, this project will stabilize the stormwater system and roadway for three-to-five years. For the long term, the stormwater system is this area is now being evaluated for replacement as part of the Carpenter Fletcher Sidewalk and Bicycle Facilities<http://durhamnc.gov/3230> project that is currently being designed.
