BOCC Regular Session Highlights from August 13th



Durham, NC - The Durham Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) met on Monday, August 13, 2018, in Regular Session. Highlights of the meeting include:



  *   The Board held a Closed Session at 4:30 p.m.
  *   Board Chair Wendy Jacobs called the regular meeting to order at 7 p.m.
  *   Commissioner Brenda Howerton had an excused absence from this meeting.
  *   Durham County Commissioners recognized a national award received by Durham County's Information Services and Technology department. The National Association of Counties (NACo) honored the department with a 2018 Achievement Award for the development and implementation of the Court Date Reminder Application. The award highlights the "culture" of excellence through technology and governance practices.
  *   The Board approved full implementation of the Durham County Library and Durham Public Schools library card initiative. The goal of the program is to promote literacy and help DPS students gain greater access to library resources. The card can be used to access resources such as live homework help, test prep and research databases. A small pilot involving four DPS schools was launched this spring and the program is set to move forward at all schools in the system this fall.
  *   The Board appropriated $1,471,403 in Capital Financing Plan Funds to make project repairs to the Durham Memorial Stadium, to support the USA Track and Field event that will take place next summer over six days. The event will feature 4,500 athletes and their families who will generate an expected $7 million of economic impact for the community.
  *   The Board authorized an additional $4 million in Capital Financing Plan Fund to support construction of Durham Technical Community College's new Applied Technology building, renovation of the existing Newton Building and the construction of a new Facilities Services Building. Construction Market factors increased costs since the original project was developed in 2015 at an estimate of $22,061,061.
  *   Commissioners held a public hearing to amend the zoning atlas for property located at 471 Colvard Farms Road from Residential Rural (RR) to Residential Suburban-20 with a Development Plan (RS-20(D)). The action amends the Unified Development Ordinance.
  *   Finally, the Board approved economic development funds of $175,000 for AveXis in support of facility at Research Tri-Center in RTP. Nearly 200 jobs will be created at the $55-million facility where breakthrough therapies to address rare neurological genetic diseases will be produced.
  *   The Board appointed Commissioner Ellen Reckhow to the Lincoln Community Health Center Board and Commissioner Heidi Carter to the Homeless Services Advisory Committee.
