Durham Hosts Public Input Meeting on Bicycle Lanes

Drop-In Style Meeting September 22 & Online Surveys Now Available to Collect Input

DURHAM, N.C. - Residents and visitors who travel along any of the 10 corridors proposed for bicycle improvements should mark their calendars now for a meeting this Saturday to review the proposed re-striping design plans<http://durhamnc.gov/3606/2018-Bicycle-Improvements> that will add bicycle lanes to help make these local roadways safer for all users.

The City of Durham Transportation Department is planning to re-stripe approximately 10 miles of roads with bicycle facilities. The drop-in style meeting will be held at The Whitted School, located at 1210 Sawyer Street, on Saturday, September 22 from 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. This public meeting will be a drop-in event and the meeting site is near GoDurham Routes 7 and 8 along with being easily accessible from the American Tobacco Trail. On-street parking is also available.

At this public meeting, attendees will be able to see the preliminary designs, ask questions of City staff and the consultants, and provide comments on the proposed plans. If residents and visitors are unable to attend this Saturday’s meeting, they can visit the project websites listed below to view the proposed cross-sections and complete the online survey noted for each project. After Saturday’s meeting, City staff plan to add more complete designs on the project websites.

According to Bryan Poole, bicycle and pedestrian transportation planner with the City’s Transportation Department, better bicycle facilities in Durham have consistently rated as important in Resident Satisfaction Surveys, and improving transportation options is a priority of the City’s Strategic Plan. “Following the adoption of the Bike+Walk Plan<https://durhamnc.gov/3092/BikeWalk-Plan-2017>, we have been taking steps to improve bicycling conditions and develop a more connected network of facilities,” Poole said. “While this project will add signage and pavement markings to provide bicycle facilities, there is not funding to make modifications to the existing curbs, resurface the road, or add sidewalk.”

According to Poole, many of the above corridors were identified as part of the Priority Bicycle Network in the Bike+Walk Plan<https://durhamnc.gov/3092/BikeWalk-Plan-2017>, and/or were recommended by residents during public outreach in early 2018. “Adding bicycle facilities often have benefits for pedestrians and motorists by lowering speeds and reducing the number and severity of crashes,” Poole said.

The funding for design of the bicycle facilities is from the City’s Capital Improvement Program, and construction will be completed using a combination of federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality funding and local funding.

For additional information about this project, contact Poole at (919) 560-4366, ext. 36423 or by email at Bryan.Poole at DurhamNC.gov<mailto:Bryan.Poole at DurhamNC.gov>. Persons who require assistance to attend this public meeting should call (919) 560‐4197 or email ADA at DurhamNC.gov<mailto:ADA at DurhamNC.gov> no later than 48 hours before the meeting.
