Durham Continuum of Care Receives Additional $200K in HUD Funding


DURHAM, N.C. - Less than two weeks after receiving over $1.25 million in grant funding for Durham projects serving the needs of people without homes, another $200,000 is now on its way to the Bull City.

The City of Durham Community Development Department has been notified that the Durham Continuum of Care (CoC) has been awarded two additional grants totaling nearly $200,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help address the housing needs of people experiencing homelessness in Durham.

The Durham Crisis Response Center, dedicated to serving the needs of survivors of intimate partner violence, has received a new HUD CoC grant of $154,019. This grant will enable the organization to provide rapid rehousing and supportive services for at least eight families or single adults who have experienced homelessness due to the trauma of domestic, sexual, or dating violence. Rapid rehousing projects provide short- to medium-term rental assistance and case management support to households reestablishing permanent housing after a period of homelessness.

In addition, the City's Community Development Department has been awarded a Continuum of Care Planning Grant of $45,810 to support the department as it serves as the CoC Lead Agency for the Durham CoC. As the CoC Lead Agency, the department provides staff support to the Homeless Services Advisory Committee and its subcommittees, organizes local competitions for both CoC and Emergency Solutions Grants competitions, writes the collaborative applications associated with these competitions, and works to improve the coordination of housing and services for people experiencing homelessness in Durham. The 2018 CoC Planning Grant will be used to further improve the department's ability to measure and evaluate Durham's progress toward meeting the federal goals of ending all types of homelessness.
