DURHAM, N.C. - Residents interested in discovering and protecting Durham's local waterways should mark their calendars now to celebrate the 11th annual Creek Week<http://www.durhamcreekweek.org/> next month.

Creek Week<http://www.durhamcreekweek.org/>, set for March 16-23, offers indoor and outdoor activities to help people of all ages and abilities learn more about creeks, rivers, and lakes as well as how to keep them healthy. Throughout the week, residents will have a chance to join litter cleanups, adopt-a-spot, or join a hiking or paddling adventure. A free open house on Thursday, March 21 allows potential volunteers to speak with sponsors of eco-adoption programs. Last year's popular "Skip the Straw" campaign also returns for the month of March.

"Creek Week is one of our largest litter clean-up efforts each year," said Executive Director Tania Dautlick of Keep Durham Beautiful. "Our volunteers are working hard, but we are also celebrating clean water as a vital community resource."

According to Dautlick, Creek Week has been celebrated in the third week of March each year in Durham since 2009, with 2,783 volunteers collecting 152,798 pounds of litter to date. Now, over 30 events are detailed on the Creek Week website<http://www.durhamcreekweek.org/> and this year's volunteers are encouraged to sign up for opportunities to serve, learn, and explore.
