Durham Seeks More Input on Zoning Changes to Expand Housing Choices

Community Conversation Set for Saturday, April 27

DURHAM, N.C. - Fast-paced population growth, limited availability of developable tracts, and a renewed preference for in-town living has led to a housing availability and affordability challenge for Durham.

In order to address this issue, the Durham City-County Planning Department is proposing changes to the community's land development rules that will allow for greater housing choice in areas where there is the highest demand for housing in neighborhoods close to downtown.

The department presented the proposed changes to the Durham City-County Planning Commission at a public hearing on March 12. While the proposed changes are still under review by the Commission, the department is still seeking additional input from neighborhoods by hosting a community conversation on Saturday, April 27 at Walltown Park Recreation Center, located at 1308 W. Club Blvd.

This meeting is an opportunity for residents and property owners to learn about the Expanding Housing Choices Initiative, which is designed to allow for more and varied housing options, as well as listen to all perspectives on this issue from other community members, and to provide comments and guidance to Planning staff. Ideas collected during this meeting will then be shared with the Planning Commission and elected officials for their consideration.

The sign-in for the meeting begins at 9 a.m., followed by a presentation by Planning staff at 9:30 a.m., and a small group discussion from 10:15 a.m. to noon. For families with children, youth activities will be available during this meeting, and Spanish interpretative services will also be provided.
