2018 State of the County Health Report Now Available
Health trends and priorities among Durham County residents

DURHAM, N.C. - The Partnership for a Healthy Durham has released the annual State of the County Health (SOTCH) Report, detailing updated statistics since the 2017 Community Health Assessment.  Current health priorities include: affordable housing, access to healthcare, poverty, mental health, obesity, diabetes and food access. For the first time, the report is also available in Spanish.

"The SOTCH Report provides the opportunity to update the community on the status of health issues identified in the Community Health Assessment. The Partnership for a Healthy Durham changed its structure and drafted new community health improvement plans to address the 2017 priorities.  The Partnership has been examining health equity from a historical point of view, researching methods to increase access to healthcare and establishing avenues for healthy food access. We are motivated by increased community wide interest in making Durham one of the healthiest communities in North Carolina," said Gayle Harris, director, Durham County Department of Public Health (DCoDPH). "However, we realize there is still more work to do in addressing inequities and improving the health of all Durham residents."

Key findings:

  *   The average life expectancy in Durham County is 80.0, with females averaging 82.5 years and male 77.2 years. Whites and Blacks are expected 82.2 and 76.8 years, respectively.
  *   In 2017, an estimated 23% of home owners in Durham compared to 48% of renters were spending a third or more of their income on housing costs, which is above the affordable housing threshold.
  *   The DCoDPH Pharmacy dispensed 290 Naloxone kits to community members, Durham County Detention Center detainees upon release and Public Health Community Educators in 2018.
  *   Immigration and ICE Raids, gentrification and income inequality were identified as emerging issues in the report.
  *   Cancer has been identified as the leading cause of death from 2013-2017, with 155.0 per 100,000 population.
