BOCC Regular Session Highlights from June 10th



Durham, N.C. - The Durham Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) met on Monday, June 10, 2019, in Regular Session. Highlights of the meeting include:



  *   The Board held a Closed Session at 5 p.m.
  *   Board Chair Wendy Jacobs called the Regular Session to order at 7 p.m.
  *   The Board recognized and thanked the Durham County Library Foundation for raising $800,000 toward the Main Library Renovation Project for furniture.
  *   The Board proclaimed June 19, 2019, as "World Sickle Cell Awareness Day." The purpose is to increase public knowledge and understanding of sickle cell disease and the challenges experienced by patients, families, and caregivers. Read it here<https://www.dconc.gov/Home/ShowDocument?id=28203>.
  *   The Board authorized the County Manager to execute a service contract amendment with Microsoft Premier Support Services in the amount of $47,125 to increase the existing service contract total amount to $86,153. The Microsoft Premier Support agreement keeps Durham County in line with the shift to cloud services and best practices across the private and government sectors including the City of Durham, Mecklenburg County, Wake County, Guilford County and many other counties and municipalities in North Carolina.
  *   The Board voted to authorize the County Manager to enter into a contract with Midwest Tape, LLC for a total not to exceed $150,000 in fiscal year 2020. The contract is for audiovisual materials and cataloging and processing services for Durham County Library.
  *   Commissioners approved a Budget Ordinance Amendment recognizing $29,998 in Complex Coordinated Terrorist Attack (CCTA) Grant funds for the Fire Marshal/Emergency Management Department supporting a workshop on the April 10, 2019, explosion in downtown Durham.
  *   The Board authorized the conveyance of County-owned parcels to the City of Durham for the development of affordable housing at 1510 Angier Ave., 711 Belgreen Rd., 2604 East Main St., 1300 Fleetwood St., and 1413 Sedgefield St.
  *   Commissioners approved a five-year lease with the Animal Protection Society of Durham, Inc., (APS) for the facilities they occupy under a service contract with the County located at 2117 East Club Blvd.
  *   The Board approved Budget Ordinance Amendment No. 19BCC000063 to recognize $400,000 from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center for Local Economic Development awards.
  *   Board of Commissioners appointed Jeanette Hussey and Wendell Bullard as the 2019 Board of Equalization and Review alternate members.
  *   Durham County Commissioners held a Public Hearing on the FY2019-20 County Manager's Recommended Budget<https://www.dconc.gov/home/showdocument?id=27985>. Thirty residents spoke for and against the Budget and the following issues were among those highlighted:
     *   Funding for Durham Public Schools
     *   Funding for Durham County Sheriff
     *   Funding for Eviction Diversion Programs
     *   Compensation for Durham County Employees

  *   Summer Reading! - Beginning June 15th and running through August 3rd all events for the summer reading program are free and open to the public. This year celebrates "A Universe of Stories" with a variety of astronomy and science fiction programs to interest all age groups.   *   Photo ID to Vote Information Session - Educational Seminars about voter photo identification requirements will be held between May and August. The sessions are open to the public and light refreshments will be served. The Board of Elections staff will be accepting applications for voter registration, voter photo identification and absentee ballots. All seminars are free, and the community is invited to attend the following dates:

     *   Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4907 Garrett Rd.  - August 22nd (6-8 p.m.)
     *   The following seminars will be presented in Spanish: Durham County Human Services Building, 414 E. Main St.  - July 23rd (10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 4-6 p.m.)
