BOCC Regular Session Highlights from August 12th

Durham, N.C. - The Durham Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) met on Monday, August 12, 2019, in Regular Session. Highlights of the meeting include:

  *   BOCC Chair Wendy Jacobs called the Regular Session to order at 7 p.m.
  *   Chair Jacobs and Commissioner Brenda Howerton each commented on the profound impact of recent events in our nation including multiple mass shootings and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids. A moment of silence was observed by the audience to honor those affected.
  *   Chair Jacobs signed on to the Fast-Track-Cities Paris Declaration<https://www.dconc.gov/Home/ShowDocument?id=28591> to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. In signing the agreement Chair Jacobs said, "I am proud to sign the Fast-Track Cities Paris Declaration on behalf of the Durham County Board of Commissioners, as Durham County steps up to take a leadership role to eliminate new HIV infections and AIDS related deaths in our community.

"We proudly welcome Durham County's commitment to fast-track its HIV response in solidarity with an expanding network of U.S. municipalities that are joining the Fast-Track Cities network," said Dr. José M. Zuniga, President/CEO of the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care (IAPAC), the core technical partner of the global Fast-Track Cities initiative.

  *   The Board proclaimed August 11-17, 2019 as Algonquin Week in Durham County. The Algonquin Tennis Club reached out to the broad black community during the era of segregation and helped to develop the tennis skills of many Durham youth. Durham County's 24th State Historical Marker will be erected and unveiled on Thursday, August 15th at the W.D Hill Recreation Center on Fayetteville St. Read it here<https://www.dconc.gov/Home/ShowDocument?id=28587>.
  *   Commissioners adopted a proclamation in honor of Durham County's Purple Heart recipients. The proclamation<https://www.dconc.gov/Home/ShowDocument?id=28589> will be read at the first Triangle Purple Heart Dinner set for Saturday, August 17th, during which Purple Heart recipients from across the region will be recognized and celebrated for their military service and sacrifice.
  *   County Commissioners adopted a resolution regarding a federal rule change proposal to update the regulation to refine categorical eligibility requirements based on the receipt of TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) benefits. The USDA is considering a rule change and has published the proposed change to limit and create a narrower definition of categorical eligibility in order to receive public comment. Copies will be shared with members of our state's Congressional Delegation and members of the Durham Delegation to the General Assembly.   *   The Board recognized a recent award received by Durham County's Information Services and Technology department. Durham County Government continued its excellent recent run in the national Digital Counties Survey by tying for second place among counties with a population of 250,000-499,999. The congratulatory announcement was made by the Center for Digital Government (CDG) and the National Association of Counties (NACo) on Thursday, July 11, 2019, at NACo's Annual Conference.
  *   The Board conducted a public hearing to consider allocating $3,000,000 in Economic Development funds to Merck. A leading global biopharmaceutical company, Merck will invest more than $650 million at its Durham plant and create 391 new jobs with an average wage of $73,382. Merck discovers and develops medicines and vaccines for many of the world's most challenging diseases.

  *   DCo Rocks for City Hall Selfie Day on August 15th - Durham County Government is taking part in the Engaging Local Government Leaders (ELGL) #CityHallSelfie Day<https://elgl.org/cityhallselfie/> - an annual worldwide celebration of ALL local government employees and service and we want to show that Durham County Rocks!

Durham County citizens and staff can show their love of local government on Thursday, August 15th by snapping a SELFIE on the steps of the Administration Building I at 200 E. Main St., or at any of your favorite Durham County facilities or buildings!

  *   Have your say on GoDurham Plans to Restructure Routes - GoDurham buses will be visible more often in January. The latest transit improvement plan calls for additional routes during the day and night.   *   MBK Durham Stakeholder Call - My Brother's Keeper Durham is excited to host a network call to provide updates on the mini-grant process, partnerships and other programs on Tuesday, August 27th at 2 p.m. Interested participants are asked to RSVP by email to mybrotherskeeper at dconc.gov<mailto:mybrotherskeeper at dconc.gov>. At that time the call-in information will be provided.

  *   Bull City 150 Uneven Ground Exhibit on Display - The Bull City 150 Uneven Ground: The Foundations of Housing Inequality in Durham, NC exhibit will be displayed at the Durham County Department of Public Health, 414 E. Main St., second floor mezzanine until early September 2019. The Partnership for a Health Durham and the Department of Public Health are hosting the exhibit in recognition of the top health priority identified in the 2017 Community Health Assessment, affordable housing. The exhibit is free and open to visitors Monday-Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
