  * The Durham County 2019 Veterans Day celebration will include a special tribute honoring the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of the G.I. Bill. The G.I. Bill was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on June 22, 1944 and is credited with being a key contributor in establishing the American middle class, expanding access to education and helping Veterans transition from military to civilian life. Durham County Veteran Services Officer Jonathan T. Crooms will provide a special presentation on "My G.I. Bill Story," highlighting how Veterans, both locally and nationally, have used the program.
  * The keynote speaker for the event will be our guests of honor - Durham County Veterans sharing their "My G.I. Bill Story."
  * "It is of great importance, as we gather to recognize and celebrate our Veterans across our nation and the nearly 15,000 Veterans of Durham County, those who defended our rights, values and freedoms, that we honor these former Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen and Coast Guardsmen - those we call Veterans," said Durham County Veterans Services Director Lois Harvin-Ravin. "On behalf of a grateful nation, the state of North Carolina and the County of Durham we thank each of these patriots."
  * The 2019 Veterans Day Holiday is Monday, November 11th. The National Ceremony is held each year on Nov. 11 at Arlington National Cemetery, commencing precisely at 11 a.m. with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns.
  * Veterans from World War II, Korean War, Vietnam and Gulf/OEF/OIF/Afghanistan will be honored, including the Walk of Honor during the County's annual celebration of Veterans.
  * Capt. Helen E. Tripp, Manager of Community Paramedics with Durham County Emergency Medical Services, will sing our National Anthem.
  * The event is free and open to the public. The media is encouraged to attend this event of high honor.
  * For more information, email Durham County Veterans Services Director Lois Harvin-Ravin at lharvin-ravin at dconc.gov<mailto:lharvin-ravin at dconc.gov> or call (919) 560-8387.
  * Most offices operated by the County will be closed for the Veterans Day holiday on Monday, November 11th.
