Most City of Durham Offices Closed for Christmas & New Years
Free E-Waste & Textile Recycling, Paper Shredding & Live Tree Disposal Event January 18;
Additional Free Live Tree Disposal Opportunities Begin January 3

DURHAM, N.C. - Most City of Durham offices, including City Hall and other non-emergency City operations, will be closed on Monday, December 23; Tuesday, December 24; and Wednesday, December 25 in observance of Christmas as well as on Wednesday, January 1 in observance of New Years.

Police, fire, and rescue services for life-threatening or in-progress emergencies may be reached by calling 911. Non-emergency concerns may be directed to (919) 560-4600. Residents are asked to make note of the following changes in other City-provided services and programs.

Solid Waste, Recycling, Yard Waste, and Bulky Service Curbside Collections
The Solid Waste Management Department<https://durhamnc.gov/832/Solid-Waste-Management> will be closed on December 25 and January 1. The revised collection schedule for all curbside services reflects a one-day delay in garbage, recycling, yard waste, and bulky services collections for some weekly customers as follows:

Week of December 23-27
*        Monday customers will receive collections on Monday, December 23.
*        Tuesday customers will receive collections on Tuesday, December 24.
*        Wednesday customers will receive collections on Thursday, December 26.
*        Thursday customers will receive collections on Friday, December 27.
*        Friday customers (yard waste and bulky services only) will receive collections on Monday, December 30.

Week of December 30-January 3
*        Monday customers will receive collections on Monday, December 30.
*        Tuesday customers will receive collections on Tuesday, December 31.
*        Wednesday customers will receive collections on Thursday, January 2.
*        Thursday customers will receive collections on Friday, January 3.
*        Friday customers (yard waste and bulky services only) will receive collections on Monday, January 6.

The Waste Disposal and<https://durhamnc.gov/898/Disposal-Facilities> Recycling Center, Yard Waste Facility,<https://durhamnc.gov/898/Disposal-Facilities> <https://durhamnc.gov/898/Disposal-Facilities> and the Household Hazardous Waste Center<https://durhamnc.gov/898/Disposal-Facilities> will close early on December 24 at 2 p.m. and remain closed on December 25. These facilities will also be closed on January 1.

Residents are reminded to place their carts at the curb by 6 a.m. the day of their scheduled collections and to recycle as much as possible during the holiday season. Paper holiday waste, including wrapping paper (non-metallic only), cardboard boxes, and greeting cards should be placed in blue curbside recycling carts. Durham Parks and Recreation
Durham Parks and Recreation<https://www.dprplaymore.org/> (DPR) will close its administrative office and all facilities on December 23, 24, and 25. All recreation centers will close at 6 p.m. on December 31 and remain closed January 1. Water Management
Normal operating hours for the Water Management Department's Water and Sewer Maintenance Division are from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Water main break<https://durhamnc.gov/1344/Report-Water-Main-Breaks> and sewer overflow<https://durhamnc.gov/1346/Report-Sewer-Overflows-Backups> calls for service placed after-hours, weekends or on City-recognized holidays should be directed to the department's after-hours emergency phone number at (919) 560-4344, which will dispatch on-call crews. Durham One Call
Durham One Call<https://durhamnc.gov/1439/Durham-One-Call> will be closed on December 23, 24, 25, and January 1. Residents may submit a service request using their free smartphone app available in the Apple<https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/durham-one-call/id1201890986?mt=8> and Google Play<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.accela.durham_nc&hl=en> stores, complete and submit an online service request<https://durhamnc.gov/1439/Durham-One-Call>, or leave a message at (919) 560-1200. Durham One Call will forward all requests for City services to the appropriate department on the next business day.

GoDurham and GoDurham ACCESS
GoDurham<https://godurhamtransit.org/> and GoDurham<https://godurhamtransit.org/access> ACCESS<https://godurhamtransit.org/access> will provide regular service on December 24, with the last trips departing from Durham Station at 7 p.m. GoDurham and GoDurham ACCESS will not provide services on December 25. Free Curbside and Drop-off Collection Sites of Live Christmas Trees<https://durhamnc.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=2160>
Yard Waste customers<https://durhamnc.gov/891/Yard-Waste> should place their live trees at their curb on their regularly scheduled collection day. Tree locations will be noted by weekly collection crews and added to the next available Saturday collection either on January 11, January 25, or February 1. A tree collection will not count toward free brush collections for yard waste customers.

Non-Yard Waste customers must contact Durham One Call at (919) 560-1200, submit an online service request<https://durhamnc.gov/1439/Durham-One-Call>, or submit a request through their free smartphone app in the Apple<https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/durham-one-call/id1201890986?mt=8> and Google Play<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.accela.durham_nc&hl=en> stores to schedule a free curbside collection of their live Christmas tree. All service requests must be received no later than 5 p.m. on January 31. Once received, service requests will be scheduled for the next available Saturday collection on either January 11, January 25, or February 1.

The City's Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, located at 2115 E. Club Blvd., will also accept live tree drop-offs at no charge from January 3 through February 1. The facility is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

New for this year, customers who don't wish to wait for curbside collection or visit the City's Waste Disposal and Recycling Center may also drop off their live trees at no charge at the following six parks from 7 a.m. to noon on January 4, January 11, January 18, and January 25. Solid Waste crews will be on site each of these Saturdays to assist except for January 18, which is when the E-Waste Recycling, Paper Shredding & Live Tree Drop-Off Event<https://durhamnc.gov/calendar.aspx?EID=4938> will take place.

*        Valley Springs Park, 3805 Valley Springs Rd.
*        Rock Quarry Park, 701 Stadium Dr.
*        Twin Lakes Park, 435 Chandler Rd.
*        Southern Boundaries Park, 3400 Third Fork Rd.
*        Bethesda Park, 1814 Stage Rd.

Curbside and drop-off requirements for live tree disposal are as follows: trees taller than six feet must be cut in half; all decorations including tinsel, lights, garland, ornaments, nails, stands, and hardware must be removed; and trees should not be in bags.

This will be the final year that non-yard waste customers may request free curbside collections. In January 2021, non-yard waste customers will need to bring their live trees for free disposal to the E-Waste Recycling, Paper Shredding & Live Tree Drop-Off Event, the City's Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, or to one of the City's parks. A list of parks accepting free live tree drop-offs as well as the January 2021 date of the E-Waste Recycling, Paper Shredding & Live Tree Drop-Off Event will be announced in early December 2020.

E-Waste & Textile Recycling, Paper Shredding & Live Tree Drop-Off Event January 18<https://durhamnc.gov/calendar.aspx?EID=4938>
The City's Solid Waste Management Department is also hosting free event to collect old electronics (e-waste), papers for shredding, live trees, and old clothes and textiles on Saturday, January 18 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Durham County Memorial Stadium in the home side parking lot, located at 750 Stadium Dr. Staff will be on hand to assist with unloading these items.

E-Waste Recycling
Nearly all electronic devices with a cord will be accepted including:
*        Computers, laptops, keyboards, mice, printers, monitors, speakers, copiers, scanners, circuit boards, hard drives, computer parts, etc.
*        Televisions, stereo equipment, tape players, receivers, amplifiers, record players, etc.
*        Kitchen electronics, such as microwaves, mixers, blenders, choppers, etc.
*        Telephones, cell phones, and fax machines
*        Hair dryers, curling irons, alarm clocks, and vacuum cleaners
*        Power tools, cordless tools, etc.
*        Electronic toys, such as keyboards and video game systems
*        This event will NOT accept large appliances, refrigerators, air conditioners or any other appliances that contain Freon in non-working condition.

Durham residents who can't attend this event can still safely and conveniently recycle their old electronics at no charge at the City's Waste Disposal and Recycling Center.

Paper Shredding
Confidential paper shredding will also be provided on site during this event. Shredding requirements include:
*        Paper may contain paper clips and staples; however, hanging file folders will not be accepted.
*        Only paper should be brought for shredding. CDs, DVDs, and other non-paper items will not be accepted.
*        All paper should be loose and not in binders or other binding items made of non-paper.
*        Residents may be present to observe their confidential document shredding if the amount to be shredded can fit into one 96-gallon roll cart (approximately 240 pounds of material or approximately eight small, banker boxes of material).
*        Participants with larger quantities will have items placed in boxes to be shredded off-site at Shimar Recycling's secure facility.

Live Tree Drop-Off
Requirements for live tree drop-off are as follows:
*        Trees taller than six feet must be cut in half.
*        All decorations including tinsel, lights, garland, ornaments, nails, stands, and hardware must be removed.
*        Trees should not be placed in bags.

Textile Recycling
Items accepted on site by Green Zone should be dry and clean and can be left in less-than-perfect condition (worn, torn or stained): bedding (comforter, sheets, pillow cases, blankets); belts; boots; coats; curtains/draperies; dresses; flip flops; Halloween costumes; hats; jackets; Jeans; Jerseys (sports); napkins (cloth); pajamas; pants; pet beds and clothing; pillows; purses; scarves; shirts; shoes (single or in pairs); shorts; skirts; slippers; socks (single or in pairs); stuffed animals; suits; sweaters; sweatpants; sweatshirts; table linens; ties; towels; t-shirts; and undergarments.
