County Announces Winter Holiday Schedule


Durham, NC - Durham County Government will close most offices on December 24-26, 2019, in observance of the Winter Holiday. All offices will reopen on Friday, December 27. Most offices will also close again on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, in recognition of the New Year's Day holiday. All offices will reopen on Thursday, January 2.

Durham County Convenience Centers

The Durham County General Services Department will close all four of its solid waste and recycling convenience sites on Monday, December 23 at 1 p.m. through Wednesday, December 25. All sites will reopen on Thursday, December 26 with the hours of 7 a.m.-1 p.m. before returning to normal business hours of 7 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday, December 27.

The convenience sites will also close on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, and reopen on January 2 at 7 a.m.

Durham County's roadside recycling service will not be impacted by the holiday schedules and all scheduled pickups will operate as normal.

All residents are reminded to set out their recycling carts before 7 a.m. on the day of pick up to avoid a missed collection.

Live Christmas trees are accepted in the yard waste containers at the Bahama, Redwood, and Parkwood Convenience Sites from residents with a current 2019-2020 solid waste decal. All decorations must be removed prior to disposal. Citizens can take used cooking oil to all sites. Only liquid oils will be accepted for collection. Heavier fats, such as griddle grease and animal fat, will not be accepted.

Durham County Library

All locations of the Durham County Library will close on Tuesday, December 24 through Thursday, December 26. Locations will reopen and resume normal hours on Friday, December 27.

Durham County Library will also close from Tuesday, December 31 at 6 p.m. through Wednesday, January 1 for the New Year's Day holiday. The library will reopen on Thursday, January 2, with regular hours.

Durham County Public Health

The Durham County Department of Public Health will follow the Durham County Government Winter Holiday and New Year's Day holiday closing schedule.

For Public Health emergencies during the holiday closure, including communicable disease reporting, environmental health and suspected foodborne illnesses, please call 911 and ask for the Durham County Department of Public Health's response team member on-call.

Durham County Social Services

The Durham County Department of Social Services (DSS) will follow the County's holiday closing schedule for the Winter Holiday and New Year's Day. During the holiday closing, residents should report child abuse and neglect or adult abuse and neglect, by calling 911 to reach an on-call social worker.

Durham County Sheriff

Durham County Sheriff's Office patrol division, as always, is available 24/7. The Sheriff's Administration and Records Division will follow Durham County Government's Winter Holiday and New Year's Day Holiday closing schedules.
