County to Honor Veterans with Virtual Veterans Day Event
Veteran Services Will Also Hold "Drive-thru of Honor"
Durham, N.C. - Residents and visitors planning to observe Veterans Day 2020 are invited to join Durham County Veteran Services as they honor Durham County's Veterans of all eras with a virtual ceremony at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11, 2020.
The annual program, hosted by Veteran Services Officers Linzie Atkins and Jonathan Crooms, will be available for viewing on the Durham Television Network (DTN) as well as the County's Facebook<http://www.facebook.com/durhamcountygov>, Twitter<http://www.twitter.com/durhamcounty>, Nextdoor<https://nextdoor.com/agency-detail/nc/durham-county/durham-county-government/> and YouTube<http://www.youtube.com/dcowebmaster> accounts. DTN can be found on Spectrum Channel 8, AT&T U-verse channel 99, Frontier Communications channel 70 and Google Fiber Channel 8.
The change from the normal in-person event and live ceremony to the virtual setting is due to COVID-19 social distancing guidelines intended to keep citizens and staff safe.
"COVID-19 has the Durham County Veteran Services Office operating in uncharted territory. This year's honoring and celebration of our nation's Veterans and their families here in the county on Veterans Day is no exception," said Durham County Veteran Services Director Lois Harvin-Ravin. "As we prepare to recognize each of you who stood for all of us in the defense of our nation in times of war and in peace, including those who have fallen - we remember, and we salute you."
The virtual ceremony will feature a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, a reading of a proclamation from the Durham Board of County Commissioners, a reflection on Veterans Day, and an observance of the POW/MIA table. The ceremony will close with the playing of Taps.
Veteran Services also invites veterans and their family members to come and participate in the "Drive-thru of Honor" in the Durham County Human Services Building parking lot at the corner of East Main Street and Dillard Street from 1 to 2 p.m. on Veterans Day. It is asked that participants practice the 3 Ws of Wear (a face covering), Wait (stay 6 feet apart and avoid close contact), and Wash (use soap and water or hand sanitizer to clean hands).
