City of Durham to Observe Christmas and New Year’s Holidays

Seven Live Christmas Tree Free Drop-off Locations Available Throughout January;

Free Curbside Tree Collection Must Be Requested Through Durham One Call



DURHAM, N.C. – The City of Durham will observe the Christmas holiday on Thursday, December 24 and Friday, December 25 as well as New Year’s Day on Friday, January 1, meaning many employees who are now teleworking due to COVID-19 will be unavailable on those dates. Police, fire, and rescue services for life-threatening or in-progress emergencies may be reached by calling 911. Non-emergency problems or concerns may be directed to (919) 560-4600.


The Solid Waste Management Department<https://durhamnc.gov/832/Solid-Waste-Management> will be closed on December 25 and January 1. Curbside garbage and recycling collections will not change from its normal schedules during these two holiday weeks, but curbside yard waste will have a one-day delay with Thursday/Friday yard waste customers receiving collection on Saturday, December 26 and Tuesday/Wednesday yard waste customers receiving collection on Saturday, January 2. The Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, Yard Waste Facility, and the Household Hazardous Waste Center<https://durhamnc.gov/898/Disposal-Facilities> will close early on December 24 at 3 p.m. and remain closed until Monday, December 28. These facilities will also be closed on January 1, reopening on Saturday, January 2.


There will be a number of ways residents may dispose of their live Christmas trees at no charge<https://durhamnc.gov/4370/Free-Live-Tree-Disposal-Options> beginning in early January. To request a free curbside collection of a live Christmas tree, yard waste customers as well as non-yard waste customers must contact Durham One Call at (919) 560-1200, submit an online service request<https://durhamnc.gov/1439/Durham-One-Call> (select Waste Management/Report Other Solid Waste Concern/Live Christmas Tree Collection), or use the free Durham One Call smartphone app available in the Apple<https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/durham-one-call/id1201890986?mt=8> and Google Play<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.accela.durham_nc&hl=en> stores. Requests for curbside service may be submitted beginning Monday, January 4 and must be made no later than Friday, February 5 at 4:30 p.m. Curbside live tree collections will take place from January 9 through February 6. A tree collection will not count toward a free brush collection for yard waste customers.

Live Christmas trees will also be accepted for free disposal at the City’s Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, located at 2115 E. Club Blvd., beginning Monday, January 4 until Saturday, February 6. The hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Live Christmas trees may also be dropped off at the following six park locations on January 9, 16, 23, 30, and February 6 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Solid Waste Management crews will be on site each of these Saturdays to assist with tree collections.

·        Valley Springs Park, 3805 Valley Springs Rd.

·        Rock Quarry Park, 701 Stadium Dr.

·        Twin Lakes Park, 435 Chandler Rd.

·        Southern Boundaries Park, 3400 Third Fork Rd.

·        Bethesda Park, 1814 Stage Rd.
o   All trees left curbside, or at any of the seven free drop-off locations, must be cut in half if taller than six feet; must have all decorations and hardware removed including tinsel, lights, garland, ornaments, nails, stands; and should not be placed in bags. When using the free drop-off locations, residents and City staff will be required to maintain a social distance of at least 6 feet and wear a face covering at all times while on City of Durham property.


Residents are reminded to place their carts at the curb by 6 a.m. the day of their scheduled collections and to recycle as much as possible during the holiday season. Paper holiday waste, including wrapping paper (non-metallic only), cardboard boxes, and greeting cards should be placed in blue curbside recycling carts. Durham Parks and Recreation<https://www.dprplaymore.org/> (DPR) will close its administrative office and all facilities on December 24, 25, and January 1. All recreation centers will close at 6 p.m. on December 23 and December 31. During the COVID-19 pandemic, recreation centers and indoor pools are only accessible to preregistered program participants, renters, and individuals with a scheduled appointment. The Park Durham Customer Service Center<https://www.parkdurham.org/> will be closed on December 24, 25, and January 1. On City-designated holidays, downtown parking is free for on-street parking spaces, in City-owned parking garages, and in City-owned surface parking lots.

Residents may submit a service request using the free Durham One Call smartphone app available in the Apple<https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/durham-one-call/id1201890986?mt=8> and Google Play<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.accela.durham_nc&hl=en> stores, submit an online service request<https://durhamnc.gov/1439/Durham-One-Call>, or leave a message at (919) 560-1200. Durham One Call will forward all requests for City services to the appropriate department on the next business day.



Water main break<https://durhamnc.gov/1344/Report-Water-Main-Breaks> and sewer overflow<https://durhamnc.gov/1346/Report-Sewer-Overflows-Backups> calls for service placed after-hours, weekends or on City-recognized holidays should be directed to the department’s after-hours emergency phone number at (919) 560-4344, which will dispatch on-call crews.
