Veteran Services to Honor Fallen Heroes During Virtual Memorial Day Event
Remembrance Ceremony to Be Broadcast Online and on Durham Television Network

Durham, N.C. - Residents and visitors planning to observe Memorial Day 2021 are invited to join Durham County Veteran Services as they commemorate the national day of mourning with a virtual ceremony in the morning on Monday, May 31, 2021.

The annual remembrance honoring America's military services members who died while serving their country will be available for viewing on the Durham Television Network (DTN) beginning at 8 a.m., and via the County's Facebook<facebook.com/durhamcountygov>, Twitter<twitter.com/durhamcounty>, Nextdoor<https://nextdoor.com/agency-detail/nc/durham-county/durham-county-government/> and YouTube<youtube.com/dcowebmaster> social media accounts at 11 a.m. This will mark the second straight year the event will be held virtually, a change from the normal in-person ceremony due to COVID-19 social distancing guidelines intended to keep citizens and Durham County staff safe. The ceremony will be rebroadcast on DTN, which is available on Spectrum channel 8, AT&T U-verse channel 99, Google Fiber channel 8 and Frontier Communications channel 70 from June 1 to June 11. You can check the DTN listings at www.DTNtv.org<http://www.DTNtv.org> for air times.

The ceremony will begin with opening remarks from Veteran Services staff, followed by the playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. Then a roll call of Durham County's 375 known active services members who died while at war will be read, followed by a Missing in Action/Prisoners of War (POW/MIA) table reading. The ceremony will conclude with a playing of "Taps," played by military at burial and memorial services.

"In honor of all of our fallen service members, our nation will pause on Memorial Day in remembrance of a debt for which we can never fully repay to the young men and women who died in defense of freedom, justice and peace; but a nation whose gratitude they will always have," said Veteran Services Director Lois Harvin-Ravin. "So, remember them, honor them, and may they rest in eternal peace."

Veteran Services also invites community members to visit and place a flag at the War Memorials in front of the Durham County Administration Building I, located at 200 E. Main St., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 31.
