In this month’s episode, host Deborah Craig-Ray, General Manager of Strategic Planning and Innovation, welcomes Durham County Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead.

Birkhead was elected to his first term as the Durham County Sheriff in November of 2018 and he returns to the show for the first time since April 2019. He described the time in between appearances on the show as a “whirlwind.”

Sheriff Birkhead talks about how the Sheriff’s Office has responded to and been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic – beginning with discussions with the King County (Washington) leadership back in early 2020.

Birkhead stressed how the Sheriff’s Office, the Detention Center and the Durham County Courthouse have kept operating as safely as possible for the past 18-plus months.

The Sheriff talks in depth about how his office is addressing the gun violence in our community, including partnering with local, state, and federal partners to target offenders as well as building and maintaining good relationships with the community. A big part of those efforts have been the establishment of the first-ever community advisory board for a sheriff’s office in North Carolina.
Birkhead also talks about how his office responded during the protests following the murder of George Floyd in Missouri, staffing concerns and recruitment efforts in Durham County, his appointment by Governor Roy Cooper to the North Carolina Task Force on Racial Equity in Criminal Justice, accreditations by the Sheriff’s Office, and much more.
