We’ve been fighting alongside you to get dangerous PFAS chemicals out of
our tap water, household products, and clothing. And now, * a new Consumer
Reports investigation has found high levels of these ‘forever chemicals’ in
some food wrappers from four major fast food restaurants.*

In our test of more than 100 food packaging products, we found that some
wrappers from Nathan’s Famous, Chick-fil-A, Arby’s, and Burger King had
levels of organic fluorine — the simplest way to assess total PFAS content
— that were at least three times a limit going into effect in California
next year.

*With PFAS linked to cancer risks and other health problems, it’s critical
fast food restaurants act now to end the use of PFAS in their food
packaging. * The good news: After learning of our study, Chick-fil-A and
Burger King just went public with their plans to eliminate intentionally
added PFAS in their packaging, joining other chains like McDonald’s and
Wendy’s that already made this commitment.

*Now, help us pressure Arby’s and Nathan’s to also do the right thing, and
publicly commit to ending the use of these dangerous chemicals in their
food wrappers! *

*The longer food sits in packaging, the more likely it is for PFAS to
migrate to your food, especially for hot food* that comes in wrappers made
with these chemicals. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are known
as ‘forever chemicals’ because they are so difficult to break down. It’s
estimated that 97 percent of Americans have PFAS in their blood, and
frequent exposure to these chemicals has been linked to certain cancers,
immune system, and other health problems.

*CR tests found Nathan’s had the two highest total organic fluorine levels*
— 876 parts per million and 618 ppm for paper bags used for sides.
Chick-fil-A had a sandwich wrapper with 553.5 ppm; Arby’s paper bag for
cookies with 457.5 ppm; and Burger King paper bag for french toast sticks
and cookies with 345.7 ppm. (For reference, the new California law that
goes into effect next year bans levels of 100 ppm or more.)

Chick-fil-A announced Wednesday that it expects to phase out PFAS in its
packaging by the end of this summer and that it is no longer producing the
sandwich wrapper. And Burger King’s parent company just committed to phase
out PFAS globally by the end of 2025. Nathan’s did tell CR it was redoing
its packaging, but has not yet made a public commitment to end PFAS in its
packaging — nor has Arby’s.

With so many forms of packaging testing at relatively low levels (under 20
ppm) in our investigation, *it’s realistic for these fast food restaurants
to take immediate steps to phase out these harmful chemicals in favor of
safer alternatives. *

*Help push Arby’s and Nathan’s to do the right thing, and tell them to
commit to getting PFAS out of their food packaging!

Once you’ve taken action, please forward this email to friends and family.
We need to show major fast-food chains the consumer power behind this
effort to reduce exposure to dangerous PFAS chemicals.

Thank you,

Meg Bohne
