Dear neighbors, sharing by city staff RQ, updates to trailwork: re-openings
of Ellerbe Creek Trail Sections! Please feel free to share wherever,
ignore/delete if not interested (and please excuse any missed
duplications).
-------------------------------
DPR is excited to announce the re-opening of TWO trails this week!

1. DPR is excited to announce the re-opening of the entire Ellerbee Creek
Trail from Stadium Drive to Club Boulevard. In late April, the trail was
the first to be closed and renovated as part of the City's trail repair
project that focuses on fixing some of the oldest trails that are in the
worst condition. The Ellerbee Creek Trail is a 1.46-mile asphalt path that
provides safe recreation space and an off-road connection for non-motorized
travelers wishing to connect from Club Boulevard to Stadium Drive. The
original section of the trail was constructed in 1985 and connected Club
Boulevard and W. Murray Ave. In 1989, the trail was extended north to
Stadium Drive.

Some of the key destinations with adjacency to the trail corridor are the
Durham County Memorial Stadium, Rock Quarry Park and Event Site, Edison
Johnson Recreation Center, NC Museum of Life and Science, Glendale Heights
Park, Northgate Park, Club Boulevard Elementary School, and the Northgate
Park neighborhood. As Durham's oldest trail and one of the most beloved
trails, thousands of residents visit and use the trail year round for
recreational and commuting activities.

2. The West Ellerbee Creek Trail, located between Albany Street and
Maryland Avenue, traveling through ECWA's 17-Acre Wood preserve, and
connecting Indian Trail and Westover Parks is also now open for public
enjoyment. This trail was closed in May to perform long-awaited and much
needed repairs to reduce cracks and root penetration and fix minor drainage
issues.

The West Ellerbee Creek Trail is an approximately 1/2-mile asphalt path
providing safe recreation space and opportunity for non-motorized users to
experience the 17-Acre Wood's preserve's native plant diversity and
resident wildlife, including barred owls, beavers, muskrats, and box
turtles. This trail was constructed in 2004 and it's popularity influenced
the City to extend the trail beyond Westover Park. In 2019, the trail
corridor received further support and attention when the roundabout at the
northern end of Maryland Avenue became a ground-plane canvas for the Durham
Mural Crew, with members from the Durham Youthwork Program and led by
designer JP Trostle <https://www.pbsnc.org/blogs/arts/westover-park-mural/>.

Come out and visit the newly resurfaced trail, post a selfie to social
media, and tag @dprplaymore to help us celebrate the re-opening of the
trail.
