‘In Touch with Durham County’ Dedicated to 2022 General Obligation Bond Referendum
Latest episode features DPS, Durham Tech & Museum of Life and Sciences bond information for Durham County voters

Durham, N.C. – The latest edition<https://youtu.be/vRyJl5tqDEo> of the Durham County Public Information Office’s “In Touch with Durham County” show is dedicated to the three General Obligation Bond Referendums that appear on the 2022 General Election ballot. The voters of Durham County will be asked to vote yes or no on the three bonds, which total $550.2 million, during the Early Voting Period of Oct. 20 to Nov. 5, 2022 or on Election Day of Tuesday, November 8.

The show is available to watch on the DCo YouTube channel here<https://youtu.be/vRyJl5tqDEo>; as well as on the Durham County Government website<https://www.dconc.gov/county-departments/departments-f-z/public-information/the-durham-county-government-show> and the Durham Television Network<https://durhamnc.gov/1104/Durham-Television-Network>.

In this month’s episode<https://youtu.be/vRyJl5tqDEo>, host Deborah Craig-Ray, General Manager of Strategic Planning and Innovation, welcomes representatives from Durham Public Schools, Durham Technical Community College and the Museum of Life and Sciences to discuss the bonds and provide information for voters to make an informed decision when casting their ballots.

In segment one, we welcome Durham Public Schools Superintendent Pascal Mubenga and DPS Board of Education Chair Bettina Umstead to talk about DPS’ referendum, the largest of the three at $423.5 million. They discuss how the funding will be used if approved to remodel and reconstruct existing school buildings and plant facilities, build additional school buildings and other plant facilities, as well as acquire land for DPS.

The second segment features Durham Technical Community College President J. B. Buxton, who explains to viewers the needs of his institution and the $112.74 million bond. Funding, if approved, will be used to expand and improve facilities for all students and staff of Durham Tech. Part of the new construction is the 86,000 square foot Allied Health Building and the 36,000 square foot Life Science Training Facility and Classroom Building, as well as addressing land acquisition for future expansion.

Our last guest is Durham Museum of Life and Sciences Chief Executive Officer Carrie Heinonen. The museum’s referendum is $13.995 million for this community resource. The funding, if approved, will support reinvention and modernization of many of the museum’s learning environments, improve and expand visitor infrastructure, and make significant sustainability upgrades. This will also include new exhibits around climate change, technological innovation, and health science, as well as others.
