Durham County Department of Social Services Announces New Interim Director

Durham, N.C. - It was announced today that industry veteran, Sarah Bradshaw will serve as the Interim Director of Durham County Department of Social Services. This announcement comes on the heels of the retirement of long-time public servant, Ben Rose current Durham County DSS Director.

"After more than 31 years of serving as a Director of Social Services in North Carolina, Ben Rose is indeed retiring effective November 1, 2022. We are so grateful of the impact Ben has made over the half a decade he has been at the helm of DSS. Ben announced to his staff his plans on August 30th, and we introduced Sarah Bradshaw our incoming interim director this week." said Board of County Commissioners Vice Chair and Social Services Board Chair Wendy Jacobs.

DSS operates with over 500 employees and offers over 100 types of services, "In this agency, the staff are the true heroes for the work they do." Rose said. "Our staff inspires me daily. COVID took its toll on the community, and I am happy to have led the agency through a global pandemic. However, I've been open about the need to be fully present for my family. I have been caring for my parent with advanced dementia for the past year and it's time to focus on being a caretaker."

Since Rose entered his role with Durham County, the organization has documented many historic wins that have made an impact including, the expansion of services and delivery of services during the COVID pandemic as well as navigating a major overhaul of child welfare through state and federal legislation. Durham County DSS is exceeding expectations in Managing Results, Child Support performance goals, and the successful implementation the federal emergency rental assistance program. Under Roses' leadership, DSS also implemented the groundbreaking Low Income Homeowner Tax Relief Program and won two national awards for various programs.

Rose also focused on the culture of the agency and worked to improve staff input and staff well-being, including expansion of employment assistance services.

The DSS Board, in preparation for the potential retirement of the Director, has implemented their strategic plan to ensure continued leadership of the county's largest agency. Interim Director Sarah Bradshaw began effective October 1, 2022 and will assume full duties by mid-October. Bradshaw brings over 30 years of DSS experience, including 22 years as a director. In addition, the Board has begun the recruitment process of a permanent director.
